Department of Theatre

The Department of is one of Canada’s leading theatre schools. Contemporary training in our BFA (acting) and our MFA (directing) programs open the door to the world of professional theatre. Our theoretical programs (BA & MA) help you to deepen your understanding of Theatre Studies, from practice to teaching, from administration to technical theatre.

Do you love theatre?

Our internationally celebrated professors and our partnerships with renowned theatre institutions open the doors to all the possibilities for life in the theatre. Our school is founded on the belief that theatre practice and research can and should exist side by side. Sound practical experience and strong theoretical knowledge influence one another and lead toward greater creative undertakings in whichever facet of theatre students choose.

The Department of Theatre in a few words

Located in the heart of the National Capital’s entertainment district and surrounded by major museums and art galleries, the University of Ottawa’s Department of Theatre offers an intensive Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in acting program (BPT) and training in the fields of theatre studies, theatre education, theatre production, and arts administration (BA, Major, Minor).

At the graduate level, the Department offers two programs: the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in directing is a two-year, practical training program. The Master of Arts (MA) in Theatre Theory and Dramaturgy offers two options for completion: with written thesis (2 years) and with research-creation project (2 years).

The Department’s seventy-plus professors, artist-mentors and technical staff teach, create, and complete research projects in two facilities which include workshops (sets and costumes), rehearsal studios, and three theatre spaces including the nearly 100-year-old Academic Hall (133-135 Séraphin Marion Private) and the brand new LabO (60 Waller Street, adjacent to Arts Court).
