The program consists of 18 courses and 2 internships. It lasts eight terms: three summer terms, three autumn terms and two winter terms.  It normally takes 28 consecutive months to complete the programme.

Those enrolled in this program take all their courses online, in mostly synchronous mode.

The decision on how to deliver the sessions rests with the teacher.

Synchronous sessions:
You must be available to attend the online sessions at the date and time indicated in the schedule, according to the instructions in the instructor's course outline. The professor may, at his/her discretion :

• present in synchronous mode for the entire course, or
• divide the course into synchronous and asynchronous sessions, or
• choose completely asynchronous assignments for part of the course.

Asynchronous sessions: You make assignments asynchronously, from your computer, at a time and date that suits you. These sessions are not scheduled.

Each teacher assigns work that is described in the course outline. You must allow a minimum of six (6) hours per course, per week, to complete the assignments. Since there are no course-related exams, the grades earned on the assignments and other work determine the final grade.

The three summer terms are the most intensive. You must take three three-credit courses that run for six weeks (from early July to mid-August), complete online assignments and complete six hours of course work per week. Those in full-time positions should plan for several weeks off, especially in July and for the duration of the internships.

Courses in the three autumn and two winter terms are 12 weeks long. The same requirements apply in these terms, but you have more time to complete assignments, research and work.

At the beginning of July, a compulsory welcome seminar is held for first year students. This seminar takes place from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on the first day of the summer term. All those admitted to the programme are required to attend this meeting to receive information on regulations, programme requirements, academic records, internships and other important information.

During the presentation, attendance is taken as a check on those who, following registration, have decided not to attend the programme. In this case, it is the student's responsibility to cancel their registration for the programme to avoid the course fee. 

Later in July, you are required to attend a presentation of approximately two hours by staff of the Ontario College of Teachers. This information session is very important because the OCT is the body that governs teacher education courses and issues the Certificate of Qualification and Registration. This certificate allows any qualified person to teach in Ontario schools. It is also recognized by the Ministry of Education in other Canadian provinces. In addition to these two sessions and the practicum seminars, all courses are held online, usually from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

All candidates whose French exam results indicate that they need to take a remedial course in French must register for PED 1599 Connaissances et habiletés reliées au français écrit en enseignement in the first winter term. This course includes a mandatory exam. With the exception of this course, there is no exam but you must pass the tests, assignments and practicum.

Since attendance and punctuality are integral parts of the teaching profession, attendance at mandatory synchronous sessions is required of all registrants in the program.

Absence from a mandatory synchronous session without serious reason and without supporting evidence, and late arrivals or early departures from a course, may result in the postponement of the practicum until such time as the student has demonstrated the ability to meet the standards of attendance and punctuality.

The only reasons for absence from a course are illness of the individual or death in the immediate family.

In either case, a supporting document signed by a competent person prior to the date of the absence must be given to the teacher or program coordinator as soon as possible.
It should be noted that not all courses are registered and registration, if required, will not be provided to those who are absent without serious reason.

On the first day of your internship, you will have to present two documents to the management of your internship school:

• The criminal history certificate,
• A certificate confirming your successful completion of the school board's Occupational Health and Safety Training Program. This mandatory training is offered online by the Ontario Ministry of Labour.

The Faculty solicits your placement preferences for your internships in the EduPlacement application (follow the steps in the tutorial to set preferences). In order to be able to answer the questions you are asked, please be aware of the school boards in Ontario that host interns in your area or in the area where you want to do your internship.  Please note that the boundaries of the school boards are specified on their respective websites.

The Faculty can only offer you one placement per internship. Any unjustified refusal, as determined by the administration, could lead to a failed placement.

It is essential to be of Catholic faith to do an internship in a Catholic board. Contacting schools or school boards on your own is not permitted, as it would be detrimental to our good relations with the school community and could affect your placement opportunities in the schools.

The timetable also includes mandatory pre-placement seminars which take place in the evening a few weeks before the placement starts.

Intermediate computer skills are essential to be able to follow the programme in alternative mode. You will need to use, among others, the e-learning platform, Brightspace. Also, the following web conferencing software: Teams, Zoom, Adobe Connect and others can be used in synchronous courses, depending on the teacher's choice.  As part of your course, you will need to do the following basic things:

1. Use your University of Ottawa email address
2. Search the Internet
3. Receive and send email on different platforms
4. Receive and send emails to groups and individuals
5. Participate in online discussion forums (first response or response to another response)
6. Follow online discussion threads
7. Download documents from Brightspace or another website
8. Submit documents online
9. Doing teamwork with strangers, probably entirely virtually
10. Follow the code of ethics for online discussion groups.

You may also be required to do more complex work, depending on the course:

1. Using sites such as You Tube to learn how to produce material for broadcast on Brightspace
2. Finding and viewing video clips
3. Following links to texts of all kinds
4. Find a solution on your own when a hyperlink doesn't work
5. Capture photos and post them on Brightspace
6. Copy photos and upload them to Brightspace
7. Create videos and upload them to Brightspace
8. Inserting photos into a Word document
9. Create hyperlinks
10. Keep an online reflective journal
11. Maintaining an online professional portfolio
12. Order resources from the Faculty Resource Centre or other libraries
13. Conducting bibliographic research using the library's computer resources
