Offered in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine, the concentration Enseignement en santé, equips you with the tools to become a true leader in teaching in health-related fields.

Acquire an expertise in the theoretical and practical training of health professionals
This program is designed for you if you’re a graduate in a health-related field of study (medicine, nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, etc.) and want to be involved or are already involved in the training of health professionals, in a university, clinical or hospital environment, as a professor, preceptor, clinical instructor, lecturer, administrator or manager.

Be a leader in the education of health professionals
In this program, you will work with other health professionals to improve your teaching and assessment strategies in classroom or clinical settings, evaluate your educational programs, develop curricula and conduct educational research in a wide range of health contexts.

A unique feature to programs offered in French

The French-language graduate programs in health education, Enseignement en Santé, are offered through a partnership between the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.
Please note that the French-language graduate programs in health education are different from the health professional education programs offered in the Faculty of Education in English only.

About the concentration

The innovative ways in which courses are offered (hybrid, online, seminars, part-time and full-time, with the possibility of going from the graduate diploma to the MEd or the MA) allow for greater flexibility for health professionals with atypical schedules who wish to maintain a good work-studies-life balance.

Microprogram in Introduction to Health Education (offered in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine)

The Microprogram in Introduction to Health Education lays the foundation for the theoretical and practical aspects of health education and allows you to deepen your knowledge in the field while strengthening your leadership.

Program structure and admission.

Master of Education (MEd), course option

* This concentration is available in French only

This program includes a total of 10 courses (30 units): 3 compulsory courses (9 units), 5 courses (15 units) within the concentration and 2 optional courses in education at the graduate level (6 units).

The following course sequence shows you which courses to follow during the different terms of your program .

Notes

EDU 6536 or EDU 5590 must normally be completed at the beginning of the program.

Important

Compulsory courses must be taken in the language of your program of study.

Courses are 3 hours long and require about 6 to 9 hours of study per week of your own time.

If you're a full-time student, you should take three or four courses per term (as indicated in the sequence above). However, if you're a part-time student, you can't take more than two courses per term.

Most courses are offered in the evenings, however some courses may be offered during the day (usually in the afternoon). You are responsible for ensuring that you can attend the course in question, to complete the requirements of your program.

Additional concentration courses may be taken to satisfy the program requirement for optional course units in education at the graduate level.

Pursuant to the University’s continuous enrolment policy, graduate students must be enrolled each term (including spring/summer) until they complete their program.

Notes

EDU 6690 or EDU 6536 must be completed in the first or second term in which it is offered following admission.
MRP 6999 must be completed in the last term in which you are enrolled in the program.
Enrollment to the MRP should not exceed the maximum of one term.

Master of Arts in Education (MA) in Health Education

Candidates for the Master of Arts in Education with a concentration in Health Education must successfully complete a minimum of six courses (18 credits): 2 compulsory courses in the concentration (MED or EDU 6531; and MED or EDU 6532; 6 units), 2 methodology courses from the following: EDU 6690 or EDU or MED 6537, (3 units) and one of EDU 6591, EDU 7590, or EDU 7797 (3 units), 1 course (3 units) within the concentration, 1 optional course (3 units), in addition to a thesis proposal and the master's thesis.
