CRECS Noon-Hour Colloquium with Citlali Déverge
Shelters, community action, the State: power relations and gender regimes
Apr 10, 2025 — 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
We invite you to join us on April 10th from 12:00 to 1:00 pm EST for a discussion with Citlali Déverge (she/her), graduate student in the PhD in Criminology program at uOttawa. Her presentation is titled "Shelters, community action, the State: power relations and gender regimes".
Abstract :
Although the autonomy of shelters for abused women, as autonomous community organizations, is recognized, they remain in a partnership relationship between dependence and independence with the State. We question the effect of this relationship on the missions and services offered by shelters. Drawing on concepts inspired by Gramsci (the integral state) and Connell (gender regimes, hegemonic masculinity), this presentation reflects on the power relations surrounding the relationship between the State and shelters. This reflection represents the foundations of a thesis project on the subject.
We encourage you to share this virtual event with your students and colleagues!
