Objective of the comprehensive examination

The objective of the comprehensive examination is to determine whether the student has a thorough grasp of the research field as a whole. The comprehensive examination can cover subjects directly related to the doctoral candidate’s own research as well as debates or topics relevant to the candidate’s discipline.

When should students register for the comprehensive exam?

Students register for EDU 9998 once all mandatory and optional courses have been completed, at the third term. The student must register each term until the final grade is obtained. It is strongly recommended that you discuss with your thesis advisor at the outset of your studies. The comprehensive exam must be completed no later than the end of the fourth term following initial registration in the doctoral program.

Exam structure

The comprehensive exam includes two components:

  1. Written component: consists of three questions based on the areas of study of the student’s proposed research project. The student must prepare answers to two of the three questions. Topics may include areas related to the curriculum, epistemology and methodology that are aligned with the student’s future thesis research area. The nature of the questions should be discussed by the supervisor in consultation with the student, then shared with the evaluation committee for comments and approval.
  2. Oral component: the oral presentation takes place if the written component is deemed satisfactory. The oral component consists of presenting the answers to the two exam questions and answering questions posed by members of the evaluation committee. Topics will include the content of the research proposal, concepts related to the content of the written component (if necessary) and any related topics deemed relevant.
