The letter of intent is an essential component of the application process for the following programs:

  1. Master of Education (M.Ed.), Major research paper option (all concentrations)
  2. Master of Arts in Education (M.A. Ed.) (general path and all specializations)
  3. Master of Education (M.Ed.), Concentration in Counselling Psychology (Coursework)
  4. Doctorate in Education (Ph.D.)

Content

A well-crafted letter of intent should serve to introduce yourself, outline your academic and career goals, and show how your previous experiences have prepared you to succeed in the program. The letter must also manifest your familiarity with the Faculty of Education, the program and options, and demonstrate how your topic aligns with the program's focus. Specific requirements differ based on the program type:

Major research paper and thesis programs:
Your letter must emphasize the relevance and originality of your research, as well as its importance in the field. Highlight how you would be an asset to the faculty and program.

Coursework program (Counselling psychology):
Your letter should be focused the program’s importance in achieving your career and/or personal development goals.

You must show that you have the main qualities required for graduate studies, such as:

  • academic rigour;
  • ability to synthesize;
  • analytical skills;
  • intellectual curiosity, and
  • good writing skills.
