The University of Ottawa's admission scholarship is composed of two separate amounts. The first component of the University of Ottawa's admission scholarship is paid directly to you in the form of a scholarship, which is credited to your student account in three instalments per academic year (Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer). The second component includes a matching amount for research and teaching assistantships guaranteed by the Faculty of Education. The nature and conditions of this second amount are outlined below.
This second matching amount includes the following types of financial assistance:
- research and teaching assistantships; or
- assistance with a project led within the Faculty of Education or other Faculties and Research Institutes of the University.
To be eligible for this matching component, you must:
- apply online for a research and teaching assistantship positions offered regularly throughout the year at the university. The research and teaching assistantships positions are regulated by a collective agreement with CUPE2626.
- be willing and available to work to a maximum of 10 hours per week (total of 200 hours for Ph.D. and 167 hours for M.A. per year).
Please note that should you have difficulty in obtaining a research/teaching assistantship position, please first contact your thesis supervisor or the Vice-Dean Research’s office by e-mail ([email protected]) to set up a meeting to discuss your situation.
Yearly Amount
The amount for the research and teaching assistantships must be earned during the year following admission. For example, if you begin your graduate studies program in September 2021, the amount must be earned between September 1, 2021 and August 31, 2022. However, your contract start date could begin after the month of September 2021.
The scholarship amounts are not cumulative from year to year. The balance of one year cannot be carried over to the next year.
Should you not attain the maximum amount of assistantship hours by the end of the year, please speak to your supervisor and make an appointment by e-mail ([email protected]) with the Vice-Dean Research to discuss your situation. You have one month after the end of each year to hold this meeting (i.e. for a September 2021 admission, should you need a meeting it must be completed with the Vice-Dean Research by September 30, 2022).
Additional sources of funding and revenues
Please be aware that all additional sources of funding revenues, such as outside work, assistantships with other faculties or other scholarships, must be reported and will be deducted from the matching component of your admissions scholarship. It is your responsibility to notify the Graduate Studies Office of other sources of revenue. It is important to notify the Office of the Vice-Dean, Research of any change to your admission scholarship situation or registration status.
