We provide hands-on manufacturing training on traditional equipment, such as lathes, milling machines and saws, as well as welding and fabrication.

An introduction to manufacturing

The MTC provides students, faculty, and external partners with training on manufacturing equipment. Our mission is to bridge theory and practice by offering hands-on training, prototyping assistance and project collaboration opportunities.

Workshops

Our three-hour workshops are designed to help you understand machine operations and safety protocols. These workshops are great for first-time users and experienced makers who need a refresher. We’ll go through a range of manufacturing processes and equipment:

  • Machine shop fundamentals
  • Milling machines
  • Lathes
  • Computer numerical control (CNC) machining
  • Metal inert gas (MIG) and tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding
student explaining how to use a machine.

Custom training sessions

We offer customized sessions on specific tools, techniques or workflows to meet the needs of faculty, research labs and external partners. We’ll work with you to design a session that delivers practical, targeted learning — whether it’s a one-time seminar or an in-depth hands-on course.

What comes next?

Students at workstations in the Brunsfield Centre.

Once you’ve completed the required training at the MTC, you’ll gain access to the Brunsfield Centre.

The Brunsfield Centre offers supervised access hours, additional tools and workspaces, as well as a collaborative environment designed to support innovation and hands-on learning. You can go any time it’s open to work on independent projects, course work or entrepreneurial prototypes.
