Dr. Wang is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Ottawa. He was a geomechanics Research Scientist at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) from 1992 to 1998 and a geotechnical engineer/project manager with AMEC Earth & Environmental, BGC Engineering and Klohn-Crippen Consultants from 1998 to 2003. He has been a geotechnical Research Scientist at NRCan conducting landslides and geohazards research since 2003. He was Chair of the Cold Regions Geotechnology Division of the Canadian Geotechnical Society from 2014-2016. Dr. Wang is a member of the Editorial Board of the international journal on Landslides. He is a member of the Technical Committee for the Canadian national standard on geotechnical site investigations of building foundations in permafrost regions.
Dr. Wang has a diverse range of experience in geotechnical research and engineering practice. He developed a numerical model (Block-Spring Model) for rock mechanics applications in the 90s that is still being used by researchers and practitioners. He carried out geotechnical investigations, analyses and designs for more than 70 projects from industries extending from mining, civil, waste disposal, transportation, pipeline, to dam engineering. He led a research team on geotechnical studies of landslide problems in permafrost regions. He taught rock mechanics courses for undergraduate and graduate programs. His current research is focused on geotechnical studies of paleolandslides to understand prehistoric earthquakes.
