Biography

Dr. Martin Noël received his BSc degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Manitoba in 2009 and his PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Waterloo in 2013. He was a post-doctoral fellow at Queen’s University prior to joining the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa in 2015. Dr. Noël’s research interests include the behaviour and durability of concrete structures and composite materials, as well as the use of sustainable building materials and structural health monitoring applications. He has conducted research in a variety of areas including the fatigue behaviour and durability of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures with FRP composite materials, the performance of structures in fire or in cold regions, and the use of structural health monitoring technologies such as fibre optic sensors and digital image correlation techniques. He has taught courses at both Queen’s University and the University of Waterloo and has worked for Halsall Associates in Toronto (now WSP). Dr. Noël is a member of the American Concrete Institute (Committees 130 – Sustainability of Concrete, 215 – Fatigue of Concrete, 440 – Fiber Reinforced Polymers, and 444 – Structural Health Monitoring and Instrumentation), the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, the Canadian Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute, the International Institute for FRP in Construction, and the Canada Green Building Council. He is also a collaborator for an NSERC CREATE training program on Sustainable Engineering in Remote Areas.

Dr. Noël’s current research focus is on the path forward towards sustainable construction through the use of renewable, reclaimed or recycled materials and improved structural health monitoring practices. Please contact for additional information regarding graduate student opportunities and research collaborations.
