Event details

Join us on March 6 during Engineering Research Celebration Day for a talk on heat transfer and fluid dynamics in nuclear reactors with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL).

This talk is of interest to undergraduate students, graduate students and Faculty members.

Abstract

Heat transfer and fluid dynamics are fundamental aspects of nuclear reactor operation and safety. This talk will provide an overview of thermal hydraulics in Canada deuterium uranium (CANDU) reactors, covering key systems such as the primary heat transport system, steam generators, and condensers. It will also explore challenges during severe accidents, with a focus on in-vessel retention (IVR) as a safety strategy. The talk will highlight key concepts, research developments, and their implications for reactor safety.

About Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL)

CNL is Canada’s premier nuclear science and technology organization, and a world leader in developing nuclear technology for peaceful and innovative applications.

Lecturer

Behnam Dastvareh.

Behnam Dastvareh

Reactor Safety Scientist, CNL

Behnam has worked on various aspects of beyond-design-basis accident scenarios, including in-vessel retention in CANDU reactors, spent fuel bay accident analysis and experimental simulation of advanced reactor cores. His expertise lies in analytical, numerical, and experimental transport phenomena.

Behnam earned his Ph.D. from the University of Calgary and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Alberta before joining CNL.
