Can I work while studying?

Yes, our online programs are designed specifically so you can study part time while working.

How long does it take to earn an online degree from uOttawa Engineering?

Master’s programs

Although these courses are part-time only (i.e., no more than two courses per term), the program’s ten courses can be completed in as few as five terms (20 months). Alternatively, you may choose to complete the program at a more moderate pace by taking fewer courses per term.

Graduate diploma

The online Graduate Diploma in Engineering Management comprises five courses over three terms, typically taking one year to complete.  

Can I upgrade my Graduate Diploma in Engineering Management to a Master of Engineering Management?  

Yes, successful graduates of the graduate diploma program can apply to enrol in the master's program to continue their studies and obtain the master’s degree by taking an additional five courses.  Active students enrolled in the graduate diploma program who have successfully completed at least three compulsory core courses can request to transfer into the master’s program.  Please note that admission to, or completion of, the graduate diploma program does not guarantee admission to the master’s program.

What is the course load and pace of the online programs?

Faculty of Engineering online programs are flexible and part time, with each term comprising two courses (six units). You can also choose to take only one course per term (three units). Terms are 15 weeks long, with 12 weeks of instruction, one week for Reading Week/midterm exams, and two weeks for final projects and/or exams.  

Am I required to go to the campus in person at any time during the program? 

These programs are delivered 100% online; therefore, students are not required to be physically present at the University at any point in order to complete the program.  Once they have completed their program, students will be invited to attend a convocation ceremony on campus, but this is entirely optional.

When do the programs start?

Faculty of Engineering online programs are flexible to cater to the needs of working professionals. There are three intake/start dates over the course of a calendar year: Fall, Winter, and Spring/Summer.

Can I tailor the master’s degree to my career goals?

Yes. There are six concentrations available within our online master’s programs: Technology Project Management, Data Analytics, Operations Management, Product Innovation Management, UX Design, and Cybersecurity. Each concentration comprises three relevant elective courses. You can complete one or two of the six concentrations, or choose the individual electives you would like to take without completing a full concentration. Your course selection will depend on your own personal objectives.

What languages are courses taught in?

At the moment, our online programs are only taught in English. The programs provide a supportive environment for Francophone students to develop professional competence in technical English at their own pace. Note that as stipulated in the University's bilingualism regulations (Academic Regulations I-2), all students have the right to complete all their work, including their projects, in the official language of their choice (French or English).

Admissions

What are the minimum requirements for admission?

What are the language requirements to apply?

Applicants whose first language is neither French nor English must provide proof of proficiency in the language of instruction by meeting one of the two following requirements or by submitting the results of one of the two language tests listed below.

Option 1: Proof of language proficiency

  • Proof of completion of a previous degree program in an English language university within the last five years, or:
  • Proof of recent prolonged residence and exercise of a profession in an English-speaking country (normally at least two years) 
     

Option 2: English proficiency test results

  • TOEFL 600 / IELTS Overall 7.0 - Individual 6.0 (Paper-based) 
  • TOEFL 100 / IELTS Overall 7.0 - Individual 6.0 (Internet-based)

Do I need to submit GRE or GMAT scores to apply?

No GRE or GMAT scores are required to enrol in our online programs.

Is there a fee to apply?

Yes. There is a $120 non-refundable application fee.  

I’ve already applied for my program of choice. How do I check the status of my application?  

Contact your recruitment specialist to check on the status of your application. If you haven’t contacted one yet, please send an email to the Recruitment Office and include your OUAC reference number, name of program, and preferred intake date.  

Once I have been accepted, can I defer acceptance?

You cannot defer acceptance: the offer is only valid for the term specified in your offer of admission. If  exceptional circumstances occur, please contact the Graduate Office. 

Evaluations

Who teaches courses in the uOttawa online master’s programs?

You will be educated by a strong faculty team with deep industry experience.

Does the Faculty of Engineering use e-proctoring for their exams, assignments or projects?  

No, we do not use e-proctoring.

How is learning assessed in a course?  

The evaluation methods for each course will be tailored to the specific subject and learning outcomes.  You can expect a combination of quizzes, written reports, case studies, group projects, presentations, and/or exams. Instructors will state which evaluation methods they intend to use, along with an overview of deliverables, in the course syllabus.  

Will there be a graduation ceremony?  

Yes, successful graduates of our online programs will have the opportunity to attend convocation in person.

Tuition

How much is tuition for online graduate programs in the Faculty of Engineering?

Tuition is $2,400 per course (three units).  We offer three master’s degrees, each of which total $24,000 to complete, and a graduate diploma totalling $12,000 to complete.  Tuition is charged each term based on the number of courses you enrol in.
