Words from the Vice-Dean
Dawn Stacey, Vice-Dean of Research
Collectively, the 120 Faculty members and associated research centres and institutes demonstrate continued commitment to engage individuals, organizations, and societies for achieving an impact on health, healthcare, and wellbeing.
Our researchers secured over $7M in external research funds this year, with many decisions still pending. Compared to uOttawa averages, our Faculty members had higher success rates in the three main Tri-Council competitions: CIHR Project (18%), SSHRC Insight (33%), and NSERC Discovery (100%). The impact and quality of the research conducted at our Faculty is reflected in impressive traditional and non-traditional research indicators, and has been recognized with many awards and prizes. Additionally, after successful recruitment efforts, we are submitting two Canada Research Chair Tier 2 dossiers.
Many research labs moved into the new Faculty of Health Sciences building at 200 Lees, some benefitting from over $12M in infrastructure from Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities. We leveraged our new facilities to tour invitees from Ottawa hospitals and research institutes at our inaugural opening in September, the local community newspaper Mainstreeter staff in November, and uOttawa Board of Governors in April, to name a few. We are conscious that research activities are conducted across all campuses; focus will turn to the Advanced Medical Research Complex being built on the Alta Vista site, to ensure needs of the Faculty are met.
A special thanks to the Faculty’s Research Committee – who was instrumental in establishing the new strategic research priorities, and the Undergraduate Health Sciences Research Opportunities (UHSRO) program. We also enhanced the Faculty’s visibility through the launch of a new webpage for posting recruitment details of active research studies.
These achievements, as well as many others, are further discussed throughout this 2023-2024 Faculty of Health Sciences Research Report. The Office of the Vice-Dean, Research encourages you to acquire insight into the breadth and depth of our professors’ inspiring research that clearly shows Health Research Matters!
