The research enabled by this award addresses one of the biggest global health threats in the 21st century, rising temperatures. This change underscores a critical need for protective measures to safeguard the health and safety of Canadians.
Dr. Kenny’s research program will bring together global experts to accelerate innovative research on the assessment of human factors affecting an individual’s tolerance to heat. Dr. Kenny’s laboratory is home to the world’s only air calorimeter, this investment by the CFI will provide for upgrades that will allow the precise measurement of the level of heat stress where a person’s ability to dissipate heat becomes impaired, during rest or physical activity in heat or humidity. The data collected will facilitate the development of management strategies tailored to specific populations that will provide the maximum level of protection to reduce heat-related morbidity and mortality. It will also inform action plans to establish sustainable, heat resilient communities and industry; and support the development and commercialization of technologies for the remote and unobtrusive monitoring of heat strain.
