Inclusive leadership in the 21st Century: Training for staff, faculty and members of the public at the University of Ottawa, with the University of Bordeaux

“21st century leadership is inclusive leadership, and inclusive leadership is a way of being and a skill that can be developed,” says Margarida Garcia, Director of the Leadership Academy at the University of Ottawa.

The Leadership Academy, in collaboration with the University of Bordeaux, will offer intensive training in inclusive leadership for faculty members, staff and members of the public over 6 days in May at the University of Ottawa.

“Several contemporary voices draw attention today to the need for inclusive leadership education as the best way to provide tomorrow's solutions to the social injustices and ethical issues of our time. This kind of training is essential to creating democratic, equitable, egalitarian and inclusive organizations, as well as practices and policies that value a diversity of perspectives”.

Inclusive leadership has been selected as a major area of focus in higher learning by the "U7+" alliance, an international initiative that brings together the presidents and rectors of 45 universities around the world. Formed in 2019, this alliance was created to influence G7 leaders of on global issues that affect our societies, such as climate and energy transition, inequalities and discrimination, growing political polarization, technological transformations, higher education reform, as well as the strengthening and renewal of forms of community and civic engagement. The University of Ottawa and the University of Bordeaux have joined to lead Working Group 4.2, which is dedicated to Global Citizenship and Inclusive Leadership.

Designed to respond to the needs of the entire university community, the May edition of the Leadership Academy’s inclusive leadership training offering will serve professors, former students and administrative staff hailing from both uOttawa and the University of Bordeaux, as well as select members of the public.

“We are delighted with this collaboration between the Leadership Academy, uOInternational at the University of Ottawa, the uOGlobal program, and the International Office at the University of Bordeaux. By putting our strengths together in leadership education, global citizenship education and entrepreneurship pedagogy, we will be able to develop quality training focused on two fundamental pillars to build the world to come: interpersonal skills (inclusive leadership) and intercultural skills (global citizenship)”, says Alain Malette, Acting Associate Vice-Rector, International, at the University of Ottawa.

Delivered by Leadership Academy team members, Margarida Garcia, Professor at the Faculty of Law, Richard Dubé, Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences (Department of Criminology), Marc Dubé, Professor at the Faculty of Engineering (Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering) and Cintia Quiroga, Assistant Dean, Research, at the Faculty of Law, this year’s training will be offered in French and will take place on May 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20, in person, on the University of Ottawa campus. Last year, this training was offered in English and in a virtual format.

“This initiative will be an opportunity to further develop the collaboration between the University of Ottawa and the University of Bordeaux with the aim of offering such training to members of the U7+ Alliance who wish to perfect their education in inclusive leadership, global citizenship and the pedagogy of entrepreneurship, as a form of support for innovative and enriching projects on global issues developed by the members” underlines Joanne Pagèze, Vice-President responsible for internationalization, University of Bordeaux.
