International seminar on access to justice and legitimacy in judicial spaces for the special protection groups

Professor Pierre Gilles BĂ©langer is the event organizer and researcher in residency at the Centre for research opportunities and Professor Eva Ottawa will be presenting at the seminar.

Traditional ways of delivering justice often leave too much room for unconscious interests or values, and have sometimes directly affected the legitimacy of the legal order, the judicial system and law enforcement institutions. Legal reforms, on the other hand, have been limited and have not always enabled the full activation of rights or allowed for the interpretation of the law in a way that removes traditional barriers.

In response to these challenges, the University of Ottawa, in collaboration with the Civil Law Section and in partnership with Latin American legal institutions, researchers and stakeholders, presents this second phase of a project aimed at linking international research and legal education by creating a dialogue between experts, researchers and stakeholders to discuss barriers to accessible justice and propose possible solutions, based on experiences in Canada and in Latin American countries.

Description of the event

The event will take place over a full day, with simultaneous interpretation in French, in English and in Spanish. In the morning will be the panel "Legitimacy and discrimination in the judicial process". In the afternoon, the panel will be "Access to justice, institutional practices and pluralism: possible proposals and solutions". The morning panel will focus more on barriers, given the testimonies of the target groups. The afternoon panel, on the other hand, will focus on possible solutions from various perspectives and according to various actors who have developed a scientific analysis.

There will be a keynote presentation in each panel to explore the topic in depth, with brief contributions of a panelist. The thread is defined by a set of questions provided in advance and selected by the event committee. Time will be allocated for questions raised by participants.

When: Thursday December 9, 9 am to 5 pm ET
Where: Online (via Zoom)
