Queen’s has advised all students who have applied to the International Law Programs that they are working to determine whether and where they can offer programs in May and June that will provide students with the academic and professional advantages of the ‘castle programs’ at another location. 

If you have already submitted an application, Queen’s will keep you posted.  If you were planning to apply, you may still do so. Queen’s understands that students would need to know what is being offered, where, and at what cost before considering the offer of a place, and by submitting an application you will ensure that you are kept informed about their plans.

If you are a full-time student enroled to the Common Law program, you may be eligible for the Student International Exchange program. CML 4104 JA – Studies in Public Law: Global Pathways to Refugee Protection (January 2024)

This hybrid seminar offers a small group of students an opportunity to engage with the legal, political, policy, and operational dimensions of various government-facilitated pathways to refugee protection. Drawing on the insights of individuals with lived experiences of displacement as well as world-leading experts from academia, government, civil society, and local communities, this course blends an understanding of theoretical subtleties with opportunities to engage with the real-world state of play around the development, expansion, and diversification of new legal pathways. CML 4107 E – Studies in Business Law: Becoming a Social Entrepreneur (Winter 2024)

This course will explore the intersection between law, social change, and entrepreneurship. Students will have an opportunity to engage with real-world case studies and social entrepreneurs invited as guest speakers. Students will be tasked with preparing social change strategy documents and deliver funding pitches to an invited philanthropist. BIPOC Success Accelerator Group

Every last Thursday of the month from 11:45 am to 1:00 pm. Topic: Open-ended. Facilitated by Rand Al-Houssan and Debra Love. Location: FTX 102. Note: this group is intended for students in the Common Law-JD program who identify as BIPOC. Bring your lunch. Refreshments will be served! Register through The Source (under Events > Workshops).

The annual Enrichment Mini-Course Program is a unique event in the world of Canadian education. The program is presented during the first week of May. Participating postsecondary institutions offer around 160 mini-courses, for which over 3,000 students register. The mini-courses are very interactive, bringing together short presentations, hands-on exercises, labs, group discussions and field trips, to provide students with an unforgettable learning experience. Mini-courses are offered to Grade 8 and 9 students with strong academic records in Eastern Ontario.

THE OTTAWA LAW REVIEW IS PLEASED TO BE HOSTING ITS THIRD ANNUAL EMILIO BINAVINCE STUDENT RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM IN-PERSON ON SATURDAY, MARCH 16, 2024.

If you've recently completed a research paper for a class or have a previously written paper that you're proud of, we encourage you to consider submitting it to the 2024 Emilio Binavince Student Research Colloquium! Details regarding submission eligibility can be found on our website.

The Colloquium is the perfect opportunity to present your research and obtain feedback and insight from your colleagues and Faculty members. This one-day in person conference will also include a Q&A session and a keynote speech from an esteemed member of our legal community. Monetary awards and prizes will be awarded for the best research paper in English and in French, as well as for the best presenter in English and in French.

The submissions deadline is January 19, 2023, at 5:00 pm EST.

Not all classes are affected by this change. The following classes might be affected by this change: CML 1102 A/B/C – CML 1105 C/M/O – CML 1108 C/B/D – CML 1116 A – CML 1203 A – CML 1206 D.

Most Fall 2023 Common Law Section exams will be administered in-person. If you wish to write your in-person exam electronically with a laptop, you must use the Examplify software. Please consult the Common Law Section's Exam webpage for the latest updates. 
 

If the UO-Academic Integrity Training (ITD 1100-A00 or ITD 1500-A00) appears in your course schedule in uoZone for the Fall 2023 term, and you did not pass the training by the Nov. 3 deadline, your student account will be flagged until the module is successfully completed. Not completing or failing the module might impact your capacity to enrol or to modify your enrolment in uoZone for the following year. 

If this applies to you, please complete the module through Brightspace as soon as possible. You have an unlimited number of attempts to pass the final evaluation, and the module takes approximately two hours to complete. If you have any questions about the module, please consult the FAQ on academic integrity. 
 

Foot Patrol

Students are reminded that the University of Ottawa Student Union operates a volunteer Foot Patrol service to accompany students who walk or use transit Monday to Thursday from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm and Friday from 8:00 pm to 12:00 am. Mental Health & Wellness Counsellor

The Common Law Section has a dedicated Mental Health and Wellness Counsellor who is a member of the Counselling Services staff and is available to provide counselling services to Common Law students at Fauteux Hall. 

When you contact Counselling Services, you will be initially scheduled for a brief mental health intake appointment (virtually or in-person at the SHWC in Minto) with an intake officer to discuss your mental health concerns and needs. The initial intake appointment is a first step to accessing counselling. From there, you will be directed to our dedicated counsellor and/or referred to other appropriate services on or off-campus that are best suited to your needs.

To schedule a mental health intake appointment with an intake officer, please telephone 613-562-5498, visit the Student Health and Wellness Centre in person (801 King Edward Ave., Room N203 on the 2^nd floor) or follow the online booking instructions available on the UpPatient app.

Common Law Student Centre

The Common Law Student Centre is your first stop for all student inquiries regarding program requirements, policies and procedures, registration, courses, exams, accommodations, equity and academic success, financial aid and career and professional development.

You can contact the Common Law Student Centre by email, by phone 613-562-5800 ext. 7158, or in person at Fauteux Hall (room 237). You can also access their virtual line system (QLess) and choose the option that best suits your needs. Please consult the Student Centre webpage for their office hours.

Wellness Mentor-in-Residence, Debra Love

Debra Love acts as the Common Law Section’s Wellness Mentor-in-Residence. She is honoured to support you on your path of continued wellbeing. Debra will be accepting appointments this Fall on Wednesdays from 12pm-1pm via Zoom. You may reserve book a meeting with her via The Source. You can meet with Debra in French or English.
