THE OTTAWA LAW REVIEW IS PLEASED TO BE HOSTING ITS THIRD ANNUAL EMILIO BINAVINCE STUDENT RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM IN-PERSON ON SATURDAY, MARCH 16, 2024.

If you've recently completed a research paper for a class or have a previously written paper that you're proud of, we encourage you to consider submitting it to the 2024 Emilio Binavince Student Research Colloquium! Details regarding submission eligibility can be found on our website.

The Colloquium is the perfect opportunity to present your research and obtain feedback and insight from your colleagues and Faculty members. This one-day in person conference will also include a Q&A session and a keynote speech from an esteemed member of our legal community. Monetary awards and prizes will be awarded for the best research paper in English and in French, as well as for the best presenter in English and in French.

The ICJ Fellowship Programme aims to improve participants’ understanding of public international law in practice and the Court’s procedures by directly involving them in the activities of the Court. Fellows can expect to conduct research and draft memorandums on questions of law or fact relating to cases pending before the Court, attend hearings and sittings, and perform any other duties that may be assigned to them by their respective judges.

Enrolment in a January intensive session course is mandatory for students in the JD program. The January intensive course is part of the Winter term. If you intend to enrol in a Directed Research Project or a course by selection instead of the course you are currently enroled in, please process your modification of enrolment as soon as possible to allow students who wish to attend an intensive course a chance to select their preferred course before January.

Please note that advance make-up classes will take place on Thursday, Jan. 25 and Friday, Jan. 26 in replacement of cancelled classes during the Call to Action Modules scheduled for Feb. 8 and 9, 2024.

Not all classes are affected by this change. The following classes might be affected by this change: CML 1102 A/B/C – CML 1105 C/M/O – CML 1108 C/B/D – CML 1116 A – CML 1203 A – CML 1206 D.

Courses by Selection 

If you have been selected for a course by selection, please make sure to finalize your enrolment in the course in uoZone as soon as possible. Please consult the Course Search Engine to browse the descriptions of the courses by selection.

Course Load and Course Sequence

It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that their course selection meets the specific degree requirements of their program and follows the correct course sequence.

Please note that, except specifically detailed in your course sequence, a regular course load for an upper-year full-time Common Law student is:

• 15 units (5 courses) during the Fall term
• 3 units (1 course) during the January intensive term (mandatory)
• 12 units (4 courses) during the Winter term

Please adjust your course selection accordingly. It is also the responsibility of each student to ensure that the courses selected do not result in class schedule or exam schedule conflicts.

Waitlists

Please verify your enrolment status on a regular basis and remove yourself from a waitlist if or when you no longer wish to make changes to your enrolment.

As a reminder, the waitlist system will only be able to process your enrolment if:

• you have not reached the maximum units allowed per term (unless you used the Waitlist and Swap functions);
• you have no schedule conflict with another course (unless you used the Waitlist and Swap functions);
• you are not already enroled in another section of the same course (unless you used the Waitlist and Swap functions); and
• you have completed all prerequisites.

We recommend viewing the enrolment help videos, in particular The Waitlist and Swap Function, to understand how to make the necessary changes to your enrolment and program the swap properly. Within uoZone, you can also consult the Student Enrolment Guide tutorial, which is available on the Enrol application page.

Students in the Final Year of their Program

Make sure you are on track for graduation! Verify your program sequence and requirements, and ensure that you have satisfied all your requirements by using your Academic Advisement report in your uoZone, Student Centre. Please email us at [email protected] if you have questions or concerns.

If you intend to graduate with an option, please make sure that you are on the right track to validate it.

If the UO-Academic Integrity Training (ITD 1100-A00 or ITD 1500-A00) appears in your course schedule in uoZone for the Fall 2023 term, and you did not pass the training by the Nov. 3 deadline, your student account will remain flagged until the module is successfully completed. Not completing or failing the module might impact your capacity to enrol or to modify your enrolment in uoZone for the following year.

If this applies to you, please complete the module through Brightspace as soon as possible. You have an unlimited number of attempts to pass the final evaluation, and the module takes approximately two hours to complete. If you have any questions about the module, please consult the FAQ on academic integrity.

Foot Patrol

Students are reminded that the University of Ottawa Student Union operates a volunteer Foot Patrol service to accompany students who walk or use transit Monday to Thursday from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm and Friday from 8:00 pm to 12:00 am. Mental Health & Wellness Counsellor

The Common Law Section has a dedicated Mental Health and Wellness Counsellor who is a member of the Counselling Services staff and is available to provide counselling services to Common Law students at Fauteux Hall. 

When you contact Counselling Services, you will be initially scheduled for a brief mental health intake appointment (virtually or in-person at the SHWC in Minto) with an intake officer to discuss your mental health concerns and needs. The initial intake appointment is a first step to accessing counselling. From there, you will be directed to our dedicated counsellor and/or referred to other appropriate services on or off-campus that are best suited to your needs.

To schedule a mental health intake appointment with an intake officer, please telephone 613-562-5498, visit the Student Health and Wellness Centre in person (801 King Edward Ave., Room N203 on the 2^nd floor) or follow the online booking instructions available on the UpPatient app.

Common Law Student Centre

The Common Law Student Centre is your first stop for all student inquiries regarding program requirements, policies and procedures, registration, courses, exams, accommodations, equity and academic success, financial aid and career and professional development.
