Word from the Dean

Happy New Year!

As January unfolds and resolutions are put into place, I hope you are taking some time to reflect on the importance of prioritizing wellness in your personal, academic and professional lives.  I believe a healthy lifestyle contributes to increased energy, focus, and happiness in the legal profession.

I am very aware it can be difficult to balance your studies in law with other obligations and goals.  These struggles will also be present in the future as you chart your career as legal professionals.   I encourage each of you to identify a couple of things you will prioritize for your own self-care this year. My own goals for 2024 are related to a Masters Swim club I joined last year.  I hope to finally master a flip turn!

If you would like to talk through options and viewpoints, we have a number of support options available here at the faculty.  We offer counselling and wellness services through Debra Love, the Section’s Wellness Mentor-in-Residence. With a Master of Education and over 15 years of experience in promoting well-being, diversity, and success, Debra is dedicated to supporting you on your path to continued well-being. She accepts appointments on Wednesdays from 12-1pm via Zoom. You may book a meeting with her via The Source.

From January 22-26 the University of Ottawa will host an array of activities for the 10th edition of Wellness Week. I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to unwind and celebrate yourself – there's a chance to win prizes as well.

This profession is both rewarding and intense.  Investing in your health and well-being is a strategic choice for long-term career sustainability.
