November 6, 2024: The Canadian Yearbook of International Law (CYIL), together with the University of Ottawa's International Law Group and the Canadian Section of the International Commission of Jurists, are hosting an academic workshop. This workshop, tied to the upcoming CYIL special issue on “Canada Before International Courts and Tribunals”, will bring together a diverse group of early-career, mid-career, and senior experts in international law, offering an informal forum for the timely and generative exchange of ideas and feedback on papers that are in the early stages of development. Sign up for the academic workshop.
November 7-8, 2024: The Canadian Council on International Law conference
Become a student member of the American Society of International Law. ASIL student membership is free for uOttawa students and includes access to the ASIL job board and events. ASIL members can connect with a network of experts related to the selected field through the ASIL Interest Groups.
JD students have also the opportunity to register International Law Option on their degree, subject to the fulfillment of the requirements.
Word from the Dean
Studying International Law has become essential to practicing law in the 21st century. In an increasingly interconnected world, international law provides a framework for addressing transnational issues such as human rights, economic and social development, the environment and trade.
The uOttawa Faculty of Law is home to a large group of globally-recognised scholars in the area of International Law and offers an extensive program of courses in international law for JD students in the Common Law Section, as well as programs in at the master’s and doctoral levels. Many of our graduates go on to work as lawyers in international organizations, governments, law firms, businesses and NGOs.
My current research is focussed on issues relating to state owned entities, access to justice in international law, and the law of immunities. If you are interested in this field, I urge you to gain practical experience through clinics, moots, and internships.
