Angela Long holds a B.A. (Toronto) in Philosophy, an LL.B. (Osgoode) and an LL.M. (Toronto). She is a member of the Law Society of Ontario.
At the beginning of her career, Professor Long clerked for the Courts of the Yukon Territory. She went on to co-develop and teach the inaugural first year legal research, writing and advocacy program at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Law.
With her LL.M. in Health Law and Policy in hand, Professor Long worked as counsel for the federal Department of Justice where she worked with Health Canada on legislative and regulatory projects in the areas of assisted human reproduction, tobacco control and electronic cigarettes, medical marijuana and consumer product safety.
Professor Long then worked as a Senior Advisor with the National Judicial Institute where she developed curriculum for Canada’s judiciary on myriad topics including judgment writing, delivering oral judgments, communications in the courtroom, science in the courtroom and Indigenous laws.
Most recently, Professor Long was a Member of the Landlord and Tenant Board.
Professor Long has been a Part-time Professor at the Faculty since 2019 where she was a member of the Legal Writing Academy. She regularly taught Write with Purpose: Essential Skills for Lawyers, Legal Writing Portfolio and Leadership, Legal Memos Made Easy and a variety of writing seminars for the first-year small group classes.
Professor Long has expertise in plain language and point-first writing for lawyers, judges and administrative decision-makers. In 2020, she co-wrote a decision writing course for the Council of Canadian Administrative Tribunals. She is passionate about teaching law students about the importance of legal research and writing in their work and seeks to guide them in obtaining and practising these skills to best serve the needs of their future clients and the public.
