The Reedsy Creative Writing Scholarship is a biannual award for writers and novelists in further education. As the world’s leading marketplace of book publishing talent, Reedsy is passionate about nurturing the next generation of fiction authors. The Law Society’s Indigenous Law Student Scholarship supports Indigenous law students who are pursuing a Juris Doctor degree, a Master of Laws degree, or a Ph.D. in law. It also promotes legal research and scholarly work related to Indigenous legal orders, language, history, traditions, and culture.

Up to three scholarships in the amount of $5,000 will be awarded annually to candidates chosen through a selection process developed by the Law Society’s Indigenous Education Action Committee. Each of the successful scholarship recipients will have their picture and biography featured on the Law Society’s website.

The Insolvency Institute of Canada 2023-2024 Law Student Writing Awards program is now open.

First, second and third prizes of $7,500, $5,000 and $2,500 will be awarded, and students from the fall or winter term can submit papers at any time, until the June 14, 2024 deadline.

In addition, both the faculty sponsor and the first-place award winner will be invited guests at the IIC’s annual conference being held September 26-29, 2024 in Scottsdale, Arizona. This includes accommodation, meals and travel costs. If a co-authored paper is judged a winner, the division of the prize and the reimbursed travel costs for the first place winner will be entirely at the discretion of the winners.

The County of Carleton Law Association is pleased to establish The Honourable Justice Michelle O’Bonsawin, Judge of the Supreme Court of Canada, Scholarship for Indigenous students who are registered on a full-time basis with the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law, including those registered in the Certificate in Indigenous Law program and those registered in joint programs.

The CCLA may award five scholarships of $2,500.00 per recipient each year. Each scholarship recipient will also be granted a student membership in the CCLA for the duration of their studies with the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law, until they have been licensed by the Law Society of Ontario. The deadline for applications is November 7, 2024, 4:00PM.

The Society of Ontario Adjudicators and Regulators is pleased to award an annual academic scholarship. To promote interest in and recognize dedication to the principles of administrative law, SOAR will award  $5,000 in scholarship money to one (in exceptional circumstances, two)  upper level (L2 or L3) student(s) who demonstrates a commitment to the administrative justice system.  Students must show, in a written essay, how their studies have led them (or will lead them) to embrace the practice of administrative law.

In its deliberations, SOAR will consider the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. Applications are accepted no later than July 31 of each calendar year.  The award will be presented at SOAR’s annual general meeting (December of the same year). Overview

Gowling WLG is committed to supporting the next generation of legal leaders in the life sciences sector. Our firm's $5,000 Life Sciences, Society and the Law student scholarship was created to do just that.

A companion to Gowling WLG's annual "Life Sciences, Society and the Law Symposium," the scholarship is awarded each year to the law student who writes the most distinguished paper exploring the evolving relationship between the life sciences and society from a legal perspective.

The winning paper will be decided by a panel of judges and will be announced at the BIO International Convention in San Diego on June 3, 2024. In addition to the $5,000 financial package, the author of the winning paper will be invited to participate in our symposium and recognized across Gowling WLG’s various channels.

Gowling WLG gratefully acknowledges the leadership and generous funding contribution from Bayer Inc., both of which made this scholarship possible. The firm will be working closely with Bayer to promote broader interest in life sciences and highlight the opportunities for law students who are interested in pursuing a career in the sector.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly influential in drug discovery and therapeutic development, and its impact is only expected to dramatically increase. This raises important questions about the ownership of inventions, the future of the “patent bargain,” and what it means to be an inventor deserving of the fruits of their labour that may be asserted against others. Can Canadian patent law absorb this new paradigm or are fundamental changes necessary?

Discuss whether IP laws should be revised and how they should be modified to effectively address the emergence of AI-driven “inventions” and their impact on the patent system.

Irwin Law Inc., publisher of the Canadian Class Action Review, is pleased to announce the Harvey T. Strosberg Essay Prize for the best student essay on class actions.

Deadline: May 21, 2024

Eligibility: All Canadian university students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, or professional programs are eligible to submit an essay on any aspect of class actions, including the law, accounting, computer science, management, public relations, and financing issues. The $10,000 prize is awarded annually. This year, essays must be submitted by May 21, 2024. The winner will be announced in the autumn, and the winning paper will be published in an upcoming issue of the Canadian Class Action Review. By submitting a paper for this competition, the author consents to publication in the CCAR in print and/or electronic form. A national prize board, composed of a panel of distinguished lawyers and judges, has been established to review the submissions and to choose the prizewinner.

We especially welcome submissions by students who are Black, Indigenous, LGBTQIA2S+, or living with disability, and People of Colour or members of other racialized and marginalized groups, as well as all submissions that address class actions in the context of equity and inclusion. A key tenet of class actions is providing access to justice to people who might otherwise be denied it within our current social and legal systems, and we welcome essays that discuss these important issues.

Please note: All essay submissions must be typed and be between 8,000 and 15,000 words. Please use the (McGill) Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation, 9th edition, and the Canadian Oxford Dictionary. We also ask that you submit a short abstract of no more than 250 words with your paper. If you are submitting a paper in French, please provide an English abstract. Co-authored papers will be accepted. However, if a co-authored paper does win the competition, the $10,000 prize will be split among all authors. Only one paper may be submitted by each student.

The Renfrew County Law Association is pleased to offer the F. Allan Huckabone Memorial Scholarship to promote future law school graduates who are interested in returning to the County of Renfrew to pursue their legal practices. A scholarship of up to $1000 may be awarded each year to eligible applicants.

The Miller Thomson National Diversity Scholarship and Mentoring Program is one example of Miller Thomson’s commitment to support equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives in the communities in which we live and work, and as part of our obligation to keep listening, learning and pressing for real progress on the road to achieving equality for all.

In 2024, the Program will provide two $2,500 scholarships to eligible law students along with a lawyer mentor to provide support and guidance to the recipient during the academic year in which they receive the award.

Funded by the Canada Service Corps (CSC) at Employment and Social Development of Canada and administered by GLOCAL, the CANConnect Micro-grant Diversity Program empowers young Canadians, aged 15-30, to lead and create innovative civic engagement projects. This initiative is designed to offer a micro-grant (up to $5,000) to youth as they develop and launch creative, impactful projects that foster civic engagement and address social issues in Canada. 

Eligibility

● Project Lead: Must be 
○ 1. A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or has been granted refugee status in Canada. 
○ 2. At least 15 years of age upon starting participation in the program and no older than 30 years of age at time of application. 
● Team Members: This may include eligible peers or non-eligible members to enhance the project's quality, impact, and inclusivity across regions, generations, and sectors. 

Encouraged Projects

We encourage entrepreneurship in delivering civic projects that are creative, interdisciplinary and cost-efficient, involving various elements such as: 
● Research and Data Analysis/Visualization: Conduct thorough research to understand the issue, and generate a set of research work for civic knowledge mobilization. Visualize data to raise public awareness. 
● Community Engagement: Engage with community members, stakeholders, and the public to raise awareness and gather support. 
● Social Media Outreach: Utilize social media platforms to mobilize civic knowledge, engage with the audience, and promote your project. 
● Digitization Efforts: Develop digital tools (such as website, e-toolkit, gamification, etc.) or content to enhance civic participation and information accessibility. 
● Policy Analysis: Analyze existing policies to inform and shape your project’s approach and objectives. 
● Interviews and/or Documentary: Conduct in-person or virtual interviews and create documentaries to capture and share the stories and experiences of our diverse communities and Canadians.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC) Legal Services Division is pleased to offer a scholarship in 2025 to an eligible Indigenous law student.

The scholarship in the amount of $2,500 will be awarded to one law student enrolled at a law school in Ontario. The scholarship amount will be applied toward the successful applicant’s law school tuition fees.

The purpose of the scholarship is to support Indigenous legal education, and the representation of Indigenous perspectives within the law, as part of CMHC’s broader commitment to reconciliation and equity.

Who is eligible?
In order to be considered for the CMHC Indigenous Legal Education Scholarship, an applicant must:
•be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
•be Indigenous (First Nation, Métis or Inuit);
•be a full-time law student entering their 2nd or 3rd year of a J.D. program at a law school in Ontario; and
•have a demonstrated commitment (through academic achievements, volunteer community work, or relevant work experience) to the advancement of Indigenous perspectives within the law.

How to apply
As part of their application, a candidate must submit the following documentation:

• A short essay describing (a) your educational background, and key areas of academic interest and focus divided into 2 parts:
  • Part I: Introduction and Aspirations of the student (300-400 words) elaborating on why you chose to pursue a legal education, your key area(s) of academic interest/focus, and the broader goals and objectives you intend to pursue with your legal education;
  • Part II: Body of the Essay (400-600 words) elaborating on relevant community or work experience, including (but not limited to) experiences related to reconciliation, access to justice, and housing matters.
• Official transcripts of the applicant’s academic career
• Letter of recommendation from a professor, employer, internship/volunteer supervisor, or community leader
• Proof of enrollment and good standing from applicable law school in Ontario;
• Proof of Canadian Indigenous ancestry, specifically, a photocopy of either a status, citizenship, membership, registration, or enrolment card.*
