The award was in recognition of her “significant contributions to legal education and Indigenous communities.” Her academic journey at the Faculty laid a strong foundation for her career as a legal scholar and Indigenous legal advocate.
Throughout her career, Dr. Lussier has been instrumental in integrating Indigenous legal pedagogies into the broader legal curriculum. As an established beadwork artist, she is keenly interested in the relationship between law and beadwork, and beadwork as it relates to community building and wellness.
From 2018-2022, she served as the inaugural Indigenous Learner Advocate and Director of Indigenous and Community Engagement and as part-time professor , taught upper-year seminars and a first-year thematic course in Indigenous Legal Traditions. She also established and stewarded the Faculty of Law’s community beading circle which created personalized academic regalia for Indigenous graduates.
She serves as Queen’s National Scholar and inaugural Chair in Indigenous Knowledges and Perspectives at Queen’s University. Dr. Lussier chairs the Indigenous Advisory Group supporting the 68,000-member Law Society of Ontario on issues related to its Indigenous members and access to the profession.
The Honourable Edith Dumont, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and Chancellor of the Order of Ontario, announced the appointment of 29 new inductees. The Order of Ontario is reserved for exceptional individuals who have made a lasting impact in our province, country and the world.
"The 2024 appointees to the Order of Ontario have enriched the lives of countless people in our province and well beyond,” said Dumont. “Together, they have attained the highest level of excellence in many fields and may we all be inspired by their remarkable contributions.”
