Alumni Peter Scrutton, LLB ’05, appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice

The Ontario government announced the appointment of Common Law Alum Peter Scrutton, LLB ’05, to the Ontario Court of Justice effective July 11, 2024. Chief Justice Sharon Nicklas has assigned Justice Scrutton to Toronto.

Justice Peter Scrutton was called to the Ontario bar in 2006. He articled at the Crown Law Office – Criminal at the Ministry of the Attorney General before working as a law clerk at the Court of Appeal for Ontario. He worked as Crown counsel in the appeals group of the Crown Law Office – Criminal and an assistant Crown attorney for the Toronto Crown Attorney’s Office. From 2012 to 2024, Justice Scrutton was counsel in the justice prosecutions unit of the Crown Law Office – Criminal where he prosecuted police officers and civilians for offences relating to the administration of justice. Most recently, he was chief counsel for the Major Auto Theft Prosecution Response Team. He has been an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School since 2017 teaching criminal law, evidence and an upper year seminar course on the law of policing that he designed.

Justice Scrutton was the co-chair of the Crown Law Office – Criminal’s 10-student articling program, an articling principal, and a mentor to law students and new lawyers. He volunteered as an instructor for trial advocacy at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law. Justice Scrutton was also treasurer of the board for the Queen’s Park Child Care Centre and coached youth soccer.
