It is with great pleasure that we launch the call for nominations for the Common Law Section’s Internal Awards for 2024.

The Research Office of the Faculty of Law annually gives out internal awards to recognize dedicated teaching, sustained and creative research, and generous service to the University and the Faculty of Law.  

Nominations must be submitted via the online form on or before November 22, 2024.  

Please consider nominating your colleagues and professors!

AWARDS:

Excellence in Teaching Awards
  • The Excellence in Teaching Award, French Common Law Program – Awarded to a full-time faculty member in the French Common Law Program who has demonstrated outstanding performance in teaching, whether through the development of innovative teaching methods and programs, dedication to the student experience or otherwise. Nominations may be submitted by faculty members or by members of the student body.
  • The Excellence in Teaching Award, English Common Law Program – Awarded to a full-time faculty member in the English Common Law Program who has demonstrated outstanding performance in teaching, whether through the development of innovative teaching methods and programs, dedication to the student experience or otherwise. Nominations may be submitted by faculty members or by members of the student body.
  • The Ian Kerr Award for Excellence in Teaching – Awarded to a full-time, pre-tenure faculty member (in either the French Common Law Program or the English Common Law Program) who has demonstrated outstanding performance in teaching, whether through the development of innovative teaching methods and programs, dedication to the student experience or otherwise. Nominations may be submitted by faculty members or by members of the student body.
  • The Award for Significant Contributions to Graduate Studies – Awarded to a faculty member, including emeritus or adjunct, who has made significant contributions to the Graduate Studies program through exceptional commitment and ability in supervising graduate students, teaching graduate level courses or evaluating graduate work. Nominations may be submitted by faculty members, members of the student body or by staff members.

You may submit up to 500 words to describe why your candidate is deserving of the award.  Including testimonials is optional.

Excellence in Research Awards
  • The Excellence in Research Award – Awarded to a faculty member who has earned distinction as a result of the importance and exceptional characteristics of their research over the past seven (7) years.  Nominations may only be submitted by faculty members.
  • The Emerging Researcher Award – Awarded to a faculty member who has earned distinction as a result of the importance and exceptional characteristics of their research. At the time of nomination, the nominee must have completed at least two (2) years, but no more than seven (7) years as a full-time professor at the University of Ottawa or elsewhere. Nominations may only be submitted by faculty members.
  • The Award for Excellence in Knowledge Mobilization – Awarded to a faculty member who has demonstrated creativity, innovation and/or impact in the realization of knowledge mobilization activities and/or products. The successful candidate will have demonstrated an excellent ability to engage knowledge users throughout the research process. Nominations may only be submitted by faculty members.
  • The Greenberg Prize for Feminist Research – The Greenberg Prize recognizes the most significant article, book chapter or monograph published in the last three years (2022, 2023 or 2024) on women and the law. Faculty members as well as current JD and graduate students are eligible to submit one published work for consideration by a selection committee composed of current and past Chairholders. Nominations for this prize only can be sent directly to Jamie Liew, Shirley Greenberg Chair, at [email protected].

For the Excellence in Research Award, the Emerging Researcher Award and the Award for Excellence in Knowledge Mobilization you may submit up to 1,500 words to describe why your candidate is deserving of the award.  Including A CV is mandatory.  For the Greenberg Prize, please note the specific criteria below (these nominations will be evaluated by a separate committee).

Excellence in Service Awards
  • The Award for Distinguished Service by a Staff Member – Awarded to a member of the staff of the Common Law Section who has earned distinction as a result of outstanding service to the Faculty or the University. Nominations may be submitted by faculty members, members of the student body or by staff members.
  • The Nicole LaViollette Award for Distinguished Service by a Faculty Member – Awarded to a faculty member who has earned distinction as a result of outstanding service to the Faculty or the University, in particular through committee work, administrative assignments or other forms of service not directly related to teaching or research. Nominations may be submitted by faculty members, members of the student body or by staff members.

You may submit up to 500 words to describe why your candidate is deserving of the award.  Including A CV is optional.

PROCESS:

Nominations must be submitted by November 22, 2024.
