Common Law Team at 2022 Davies Moot
Congratulations to the University of Ottawa’s Corporate Securities Moot Team who won three awards at the Davies Moot this past weekend!

With 12 law schools competing this year, uOttawa’s team won best factum, Tommy Friedlich was the top oralist, and the team finished 2nd overall.

As a four-member team, Thomas Boyd (2L), Keenan MacNeal (2L), Tommy Friedlich (3L), and Mona Shadid (3L) were exemplary! Their teamwork and outstanding individual performances helped them advance to the finals.

Deferring to their seniors, the team was represented by Tommy Friedlich and Mona Shadid in the finals against Western University. The final panel of judges included the Honourable Mahmud Jamal of the SCC, Justice Jessica Kimmel of the ONSC, Justice Siobhan Monaghan of the FCA, Justice Benjamin Zarnett of the ONCA, and Mr. D.Grant Vingoe, Chair and CEO of the Ontario Securities Commission.

In the finals, Tommy and Mona were calm and composed under pressure despite the challenging questions and imposing bench. The Team spent several months preparing for this weekend, and the culmination of that hard work and practice paid off with podium finishes in all 3 categories.

As a faculty, we could not be prouder of this Team. Professor PM Vasudev, a business law expert and long-time coach of the corporate securities moot team, mentored the team throughout the moot and helped prepare them for the oral advocacy sections of the Moot. We are grateful for his continued support and assistance in preparing our Mooters for the Davies Moot.

Thank you to the guest judges who volunteered their personal time to prepare the team for the oral rounds of the moot. Their tough questions and honest feedback were instrumental in the Team’s success at the moot. Finally, we cannot thank Professor Anthony Daimsis enough for polishing the team’s oral advocacy skills which propelled them to the finals.

We wish both Tommy and Mona the best of luck as they graduate and begin their articles this summer. For our 2Ls, Thomas and Keenan, we look forward to your future performances next year!
