At the October 28, 2024 Call to the Bar ceremony in Toronto, the Law Society of Ontario bestowed a degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LLD) on the Honourable Johanne Lafrance-Cardinal, a family law and mediation expert, renowned for her incredible ability to effectively and fairly settle disputes.

A lifelong resident of Cornwall Ontario, Lafrance-Cardinal was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1980 and then started her own practice specializing in real estate, family law and estates.  At that time, there was only one other woman lawyer in the region.

She was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice in 1994, presiding in both family and criminal matters in Cornwall and L’Orignal. In 1999, she was appointed to the Unified Family Court of the Superior Court of Justice. Justice Lafrance Cardinal remained the only judge for the Superior Court of Justice for Cornwall from 1999 to 2005.

She has made significant contributions of time, energy and leadership to the legal community, inspiring and mentoring many colleagues over the years. Well-known for her commitment to French language services, Justice Lafrance-Cardinal’s work has been instrumental in the development of French language services throughout Ontario’s justice system.

Justice Lafrance-Cardinal has committed her life to giving back to her community. Her dedication and contributions to the community at large are numerous. She was involved in creating a French school for gifted children as well as a French daycare. She is a strong supporter of the Children’s Treatment Centre, local women’s shelters and other community initiatives that support those most vulnerable.

Congratulations Justice Lafrance-Cardinal!
