As jurists, professors, and law students, it is incumbent upon us to speak out against injustice, especially within our justice system. We recognize the long history of systemic discrimination, racism and violence within our legal system that continues to this day. We must challenge bias and discrimination in our profession.
We also acknowledge that academia has a long history of systemic discriminatory practices. We are committed to ongoing learning, reflection, and action within our own walls. We acknowledge the burden placed on members of the Black community in developing and delivering anti-racist education, training and programs. We commit to collaborating with the Black community as we strive to be strong and trustworthy allies.
I want to reiterate the statement made by President Jacques Frémont reaffirming “ our commitment to fighting racism on our campus and within our community. Everyone has a right to an environment that is free from harassment and discrimination, and where every person is valued and treated with dignity and respect.”
We are a community committed to social justice and anti-racism and now, more than ever, we must act to defend those values.
