University of Ottawa Participates in The 2020 Canadian National Negotiation Competition
Gagan Lamba and Aniket Bhat represented the Common Law Section at the 2020 Canadian National Negotiation Competition held at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton on February 22 and 23, 2020.

The annual competition features teams from Canadian law schools across the country and highlights the importance of negotiation in a legal context.  Teams of two students advocate for their clients’ interests in an effort to negotiate a transaction or a resolution to a dispute. The competition involves multiple rounds of two-party and multi-party negotiations.

Gagan and Aniket qualified to represent the Common Law Section at Dentons’ Ottawa Negotiation Competition in October 2019 where they were ranked the highest out of 32 teams.

Dentons and the Common Law Section sponsored the team’s participation in the national competition.

Gagnan and Anikett summed up their experience in this way.

''Participating at the 2019 Denton's Negotiation Competition and having the opportunity to represent uOttawa at the Canadian National Negotiation Competition in New Brunswick this month have been incredible experiences. We had the chance to develop skills and strategies that we will be able to apply in future competitions and in our professional careers. The biggest takeaway was the ability to connect with so many talented law students, lawyers and faculty from around the country.''

The team would like to thank the Dentons Ottawa office for their support, and especially Dentons associates Sean Del Giallo and Emily McMurtry (’18), who helped coach the team, as well as Professor Ellen Zweibel.
