uOttawa earns multiple awards at province-wide negotiation competition
How do uOttawa law students respond to a global pandemic? With teamwork!

After weeks of gruelling training, both uOttawa negotiation teams at the Walsh Negotiation Competition held virtually on March 13, showcased their skills, resilience and teamwork, earning multiple awards.

This is the seventh consecutive year that members of our competitive negotiation team have achieved stellar success at the province-wide family law competition.

Our team’s prizes:

  • Second place Top Teams category: Chelsea Walwyn (3L) and Paige Miraglia (2L)
  • Third place Top Teams category: Omair Jafrani (3L) and Mirsa Duka (3L)
  • Second place Top Student category: Chelsea Walwyn

Professor Lynn Rockman, head coach of the team, said that the students benefitted greatly from others’ help. “Faced with unprecedented obstacles this year, the students’ training really did ‘take a village.’ Student coaches Kiran Uppal (3L) and Esti Azizi (2L) worked tirelessly to assist the teams. They were both an integral part of (their) success.”

Coach Rockman was also grateful to the former and current uOttawa common law students who volunteered their time: Robert Barnes, Crystal McConkey, Ravital Zabarsky, Rachel Zweig, Sarah Antonious (3L), Diana Enache (3L) and Nadia Peles (3L).

Rockman highlighted the role of this year’s co-coach, and past Walsh award winner, Kayleigh Pink (3L). “I have no doubt that much of the team’s success is attributable to Ms. Pink’s dedication, work ethic, professionalism, communication and organizational skills, and perhaps most significantly, her kind heart and generous spirit.”

Students earn their spot on uOttawa’s Walsh competitive negotiation team by winning the local qualifier run by Rockman each fall, the BLG Negotiation Competition. This year, 40 upper year students competed virtually at the day-long BLG competition for the six coveted spots on the Walsh team.  Rockman thanks Katherine Cooligan for her ongoing collaboration and BLG for its sponsorship.
