The uOttawa Legal Tech Lab is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Faculties of Law and Engineering, funded by Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), to conduct legal technology research and implement legal technology solutions at the University of Ottawa.

The legal sector is changing. Law firms face growing pressures to provide more cost-effective services. Governments, industries and citizens are struggling with making evidence-based decisions on the basis of more and increasingly complex legal information. Legal expertise remains scarce, expensive and inaccessible resulting in a large unmet demand for legal services and an access-to-justice gap. Technology offers novel solutions to deal with these challenges.

The uOttawa Legal Tech Lab engages in a range of activities including:

  • conducting cutting-edge research on legal text mining and the automation of legal processes,
  • promoting legal technology education, including online through http://www.datascienceforlawyers.org/
  • serving as partner for researchers, law firms and legal technology companies in Ottawa and around the world;
  • acting as incubator to promote legal technology entrepreneurship, in particular among uOttawa students.

Projects

Supreme Court of Canada

Decoding the Supreme Court of Canada

The Supreme Court of Canada is a central institution in Canadian law and politics, and yet to date, there has been relatively little empirical research on its work. Funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council grant, this project uses state-of-the-art legal data analytics to investigate over 4,000 Supreme Court decisions from 1975 to the end of 2021.

Ontario Court of Appeal

Decoding the Ontario Court of Appeal

Appellate courts occupy a unique position. They are the final instance for most litigants guiding lower courts but they are also a gateway to the Supreme Court. This dual role calls for special scrutiny and analysis. Yet, data and analysis of appeal courts remains scarce especially compared to apex courts.
