**IMPORTANT**
DUE TO TIMETABLING CONSTRAINTS, STUDENTS CANNOT MAKE CHANGES TO THEIR BLOCK SELECTION ONLINE AFTER JUNE 27, 2024.
Enrolment for first-year courses is available online; however, these are general provisions. Specific conditions may apply for students who are enroled in certain programs (e.g. combined programs). Please be sure to carefully read the information relevant to your program. First-year students have a set curriculum and require block enrolment – meaning that they must enrol in a block of pre-determined courses.
If, for very exceptional reasons, you will not have access to the Internet during the enrolment period, you may submit a Modification/Cancellation of Enrolment form (PDF, 228.42 KB) by email at [email protected]. Please indicate, in order of preference, at least 3 block selections.
What is a small group and block registration?
All first year students take one of their substantive law courses in a small group format. The small group course includes legal writing and legal research training, including training in computer assisted research. The small group format ensures that all students have the opportunity to get to know their colleagues well, to participate in meaningful classroom discussions and to enjoy continuous feedback from the professor.
- Small group: class size of approximately 20 students
- Large group: class size of approximately 60-80 students
You must enrol to one of the following groups:
- Small group CML 1203 Criminal Law and Procedure (6 units): your large groups will automatically be CML 1107 Torts (5 units) and CML 1205 Introduction to Public Law and Constitutional Law (5 units).
- Small group CML1207 Torts (6 units): your large groups will automatically be CML 1103 Criminal Law and Procedure (5 units) and CML 1205 Introduction to Public Law and Constitutional Law (5 units).
- Small group CML1206 Introduction to Public Law and Constitutional Law (6 units): your large groups will automatically be CML 1107 Torts (5 units) and CML 1103 Criminal Law and Procedure (5 units).
The Common Law Student Centre will enrol you in your block. You will see your block enrolment in uoZone by the end of June/early July. You can consult the different blocks available to English JD students to compare course schedules and other information related to the blocks. We cannot guarantee enrolment in any specific small group or block.
Once you enrol for your small group, you are guaranteed enrolment in a corresponding block of substantive law courses.

First year thematic Course
As of October 2024 you will be able to enrol in a thematic course for the Winter 2025 term. The first-year thematic course is mandatory for all students admitted to the English JD program. The first-year thematic course allows you to select one course from a variety of interesting options designed to broaden your perspectives on the law. You can use the Course Search Engine to browse the different 1L thematic courses offered for 2024-2025. All first year thematic courses fit with the block timetables.
