Overview of the enrolment process

Student responsibility

When enrolling in a program at the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, it is the responsibility of each student to:

  • Become familiar with the specific degree requirements of their program and ensure that their course selection meets these requirements;
  • Ensure that they have completed any prerequisites for courses selected;
  • Ensure that there are no holds in your Student Centre dashboard preventing you from enrolling prior to the enrolment period;
  • Ensure that the courses selected do not result in class schedule or exam schedule conflicts;
  • Meet all deadlines indicated in the important dates published by the Common Law Section and the University of Ottawa;
  • Become familiar with the Common Law Section’s Academic Regulations and other regulations of the University of Ottawa. It is understood that, by the act of enrolling, students agree to abide by these regulations;
  • Become familiar with your enrolment tools. All Student Centre applications in your uoZone Applications tab will have a pdf tutorial under their name. To open the tutorial for one application, click tutorial (PDF) under the application title. To help you with enrolment, UOttawa has produced a series of videos, including an animated video and several tutorials on enrolment functions such as understanding your academic requirements, reserved spaces and the waitlist.

Students are welcome to consult a member of the Common Law Student Centre for assistance with any of these issues.

Enrolment process

The regular enrolment period for JD students will begin on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at 10:00 AM ET for the 2024-2025 academic year.

  • If, for very exceptional reasons, you will not have access to the Internet during the enrolment period, you may submit a modification/cancellation of enrolment form (PDF, 228.42 KB by email at [email protected].
  • The Common Law Student Centre will not confirm receipt of your form or of your enrolment. Please check uoZone to confirm your enrolment.
  • Enrolment in some courses (those requiring a selection process and Directed Research Projects requiring a professor’s approval) will not be possible online. Where this is the case, notice is given in the course description found in the Course Search Engine. These courses must be added to your enrolment by the Common Law Student Centre.

STEP 1 - PLAN YOUR COURSE SELECTION AND TIMETABLE

  • Consult the degree requirements and course sequence for your program to verify the compulsory and optional courses for which you should enrol in the upcoming year.
  • Use our course search engine to view the full descriptions of courses offered in the upcoming year. You can filter your search based on a variety of criteria including class schedule, instructor, term and year of study.
  • Check the examination timetable. Ensure that the courses in which you enrol do not have exams scheduled simultaneously. No accommodation is provided for exam timetable conflicts, and it is each student's responsibility to ensure they do not have any exams scheduled simultaneously.

STEP 2 - ENROL FOR YOUR COURSES

  • Log into uoZone and, under Applications, click Student Centre. Under Academics, click on Enrol.

If your preferred course is full, it is recommended that you enrol in your second best option and then use the Swap function to enrol on the waitlist for your preferred course afterwards. It is possible to use the same process for more than one course in which you wish to be enrolled instead of the one selected. However, please note that the first course swap to be processed will cancel all other waitlist enrolment requests. Should you wish to change your enrolment again, you will have to repeat the process.

A reminder that we do not guarantee the availability of courses. If you are entering 3L and are unable to enrol in a mandatory course required for graduation, you should contact the Common Law Student Centre for academic planning after June 20.

We suggest learning how to use this function in uoZone by consulting the Enrolment Support page for a short video tutorial on “The Waitlist and Swap Function.”

In our experience, students are often successful in enrolling in courses from the waitlist. We typically see lots of movement over the summer and during the first week of every term.

STEP 3 - VIEW YOUR TIMETABLE

  • Your timetable is only available via the Student Centre function. You can access it by logging into your uoZone account and, under Applications, click Student Centre.

STEP 4 - PAY YOUR TUITION FEES

  • You can access your online statement of account on your Student Centre, which is located under Applications in your uoZone account.
