Doctoral student Angela Lee wins national women’s leadership award
Doctoral student Angela Lee has been awarded the 2019 Graduate Student Award of Merit by the Senior Women Academic Administrators of Canada (SWAAC). The award recognizes women who have demonstrated outstanding leadership at their universities and in their communities, while maintaining an exemplary academic record.

Ms. Lee’s research on the Canadian agri-food sector takes place at the intersection between new and emerging scientific and technological innovations, the environment and the law.  She chooses to grapple with challenging questions related to food policy and regulation in Canada.  Both can have profound practical implications on health, and Lee is therefore committed to giving voice to groups, concerns and viewpoints that are otherwise marginalized in policy debates.

In addition to her research, Ms. Lee is active in advancing the growth and development of food law in Canada. In 2016, along with two JD students, she co-founded the University of Ottawa Food Law Society. She was part of the executive organizing committee of the second annual conference on Food Law and Policy in Canada, hosted by the University of Ottawa in 2017, and continues to be involved with the emerging Canadian Association for Food Law and Policy. She also co-developed and currently co-teaches a course on food law in the Common Law Section, and is co-editing a forthcoming volume on food law in Canada.

Founded in 1987, SWAAC provides a forum and a collective voice for women in senior administrative ranks in Canadian universities, colleges and technical institutes. SWAAC promotes female leadership through mentoring future leaders and recognizing exceptional leadership.

Ms. Lee will receive her award at the SWAAC annual conference on April 26 in Waterloo.

Congratulation to Angela Lee on this exceptional recognition!
