Biography

Mahmoud Elberry is a Ph.D. student in the common Law section, specializing in constitutional law. His scholarly pursuits focus on the interplay between constitutional amendments, judicial review, and the emerging concept of abusive constitutionalism.

His academic journey is underpinned by an extensive legal education and hands-on legal experience. Mahmoud started his academic journey at Alexandria University's School of Law in Egypt, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) in 2005. He then completed his Master of Laws (LL.M) from the same institution in 2016. Mahmoud later honed his legal expertise with a Master of Arts in Legal Studies from Carleton University in 2022.

His professional experience in the Egyptian judiciary complements his academic pursuits, having served in several high-ranking judicial positions. From 2018 to 2020, he held the position of Chief Justice at the academic office of the Egyptian Court of Cassation. Prior to this, Mahmoud served a three-year tenure as a judge and chief justice at the Employment Court from 2014 to 2018. Earlier in his career, he served as a public prosecutor at the Egyptian Public Prosecution from 2007 to 2014.

This synthesis of academia and practical judicial expertise provides a unique perspective in his doctoral studies, which aims to contribute to the field of Egyptian constitutional law through his research and studies at the University of Ottawa.
