This report provides a glimpse of research activities and achievements at the Common Law Section from the 2022-2023 fiscal year, or more precisely, the period from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023.
The visual theme for this year’s report is inspired by the new mural that was painted in Fauteux Hall in January 2023 by Indigenous artists Christi Belcourt and Isaac Murdoch. The mural represents Anishinaabe teachings and legal principles relating to nibi (water), and it reminds us of the ways we are all connected to each other and to the space that surrounds us. It’s hard to imagine a more appropriate message for a law school and for a community of researchers who everyday push to make the legal system more just, more accessible, more meaningful, and more reflective of society at large.
This report is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our esteemed researchers, who have tirelessly delved into critical legal issues that shape our society. Within this report we celebrate innovative research projects and thought-provoking approaches to our complex legal landscape. Since 2022, we have welcomed an impressive group of new faculty members who bring with them new perspectives on Indigenous law, public health law, international economic law, human rights and corporate law. These new members of our research community are already fitting in well with our exceptional faculty, many of whose recent achievements are highlighted in the sections of the report that cover our thematic research areas.
We encourage you to dive into the rich content of this report and engage with the fresh ideas presented within.
