Congratulations to uOttawa Faculty of Law alumna Camille Nelson (LLB ’94) on her appointment as the next Dean of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa William S. Richardson School of Law, effective August 1, 2020.
Camille Nelson has an impressive academic career and has spent the last ten years at the head of several post secondary institutions. In 2010, she was appointed Dean of Boston’s Suffolk University Law School where she remained until 2016, then became the Dean at The Washington College of Law at American University in Washington, D.C.. Before joining the faculty at Suffolk, Prof. Nelson taught at the Saint Louis University School of Law for nearly a decade. Her writings and lectures have earned her a reputation as a top expert on the intersection of race and culture with criminal law and procedure, health law, and comparative law.
A native of Jamaica, Camille Nelson holds a BA from the University of Toronto, and a law degree magna cum laude, from the University of Ottawa. She also received a Master’s degree in law from Columbia University, where she also received the Paul Robeson Distinguished Alumni Award from the Black Law Students Association in 2017. She clerked for Justice Frank Iacobucci, becoming the first Black woman to clerk for the Supreme Court of Canada, before working as an associate at McCarthy Tetrault in Toronto, the largest law firm in Canada.
