Prior to being appointed as Dean, Dr. Hughes was a full professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of New Brunswick where she was also a University Research Scholar and the principal investigator on a research and community action collaboration titled “Looking out for each other”, an initiative that supports Indigenous Communities and Aboriginal organizations to support families and friends of missing persons. Before she was appointed at the University of New Brunswick, Dr. Hughes practiced human rights law in Ottawa.
The Bora Laskin Faculty of Law at Lakehead University is a regional law school, focused in Northern Ontario. Its mandates are Aboriginal and Indigenous Law, Natural Resources and Environmental Law, and Sole/Small Town Practice with the Integrated Practice Curriculum. Dr. Hughes’ experience is expected make her an excellent fit for the faculty, which she is excited to join because of their commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and access to justice.
