Karen Jensen, former Assistant Dean and Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa appointed as Pay Equity Commissioner
On September 10, 2019 the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, announced that Karen Jensen, former assistant dean and professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa, has been appointed as Canada’s first Pay Equity Commissioner.

As Pay Equity Commissioner, Ms. Jensen will work with the Canadian Human rights Commission and a number of subject-matter experts to facilitate the resolution of disputes related to pay equity and assist people in understanding their rights and obligations under the Pay Equity Act, which puts forth steps for employers to achieve pay equity in their workplace. The Act is expected to come into force in 2020, and Ms. Jensen will be appointed to the Canadian Human Rights Commission effective October 16, 2019.

Ms. Jensen, an experienced litigator, has represented clients in human rights, constitutional, administrative and employment/labour law throughout her 25+ year career. Between 2005 and 2009 she served on the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal.
