Professor Errol Mendes Elected to Royal Society of Canada

The Common Law Section is proud to announce that Professor Errol Mendes has been selected as a new fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC), distinguishing him as one of Canada’s most valued and important scholars.  He will be formally inducted at the RSC’s celebration of excellence in November, in Ottawa.

The RSC is Canada’s senior national academy. It “exists to promote Canadian research and scholarly accomplishment in both of Canada’s official languages, to mentor young scholars and artists, to recognize academic and artistic excellence, and to advise governments, non-governmental organizations, and Canadians generally on matters of public interest” (RSC Mandate, Mission and Vision). The RSC’s prestigious membership includes over 2,000 Canadian scholars, artists, and scientists, peer-elected as the best in their field. They are recognized as distinguished men and women who have made remarkable contributions in the arts, the humanities and the sciences, as well as in Canadian life.

Throughout his remarkable career, Professor Mendes has made significant and meaningful contributions to society as a lawyer, author, professor and advisor to both the public and private sector. His leadership, research and scholarship speak directly to issues of critical importance affecting our society. The variety and scope of Professor Mendes’ work and publications is vast, including – but not limited to – global governance and human rights, promoting a fair global labour market, the international criminal court, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, human rights in China, Senate reform, diversity and multiculturalism, and national security. His steadfast dedication to education and the law, his profound commitment to justice and peace, and his willingness and interest in helping others are demonstrative of the values he upholds as a Canadian, and worthy of his election to the Royal Society of Canada.

Congratulations to Professor Mendes on this exceptional achievement!
