The Faculty of Law’s Civil Law Section is pleased to welcome Professor Joan-Josep Vallbé of the University of Barcelona as a visiting researcher from May 19-25, 2023.

Professor Vallbé will be giving a talk on May 23 entitled “The Effect of Judges’ Gender on Decisions Regarding Intimate-Partner Violence”. This talk stems from Professor Vallbé’s research on judicial inequality regarding intimate-partner violence cases, specifically examining how judges’ gender, experience and caseload can affect judicial decisions in intimate-partner violence cases.

Professor Vallbé’s talk will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on May 23, 2023, in Fauteaux Hall, room 102.  Lunch will be served, and all are welcome.  The talk will be presented in English.

Professor Vallbé is currently an Associate Professor of political science at the University of Barcelona, where he leads projects on the empirical analysis of judicial politics and the political economy of judicial behavior. He has previously been post-doctoral fellow at the University of Amsterdam and visiting researcher at Cornell University. In the last two years, he has also served as deputy dean for Research and International Relations of the University of Barcelona's Faculty of Law.
