As 2024 draws to a close, the Common Law Section is proud to reflect on and celebrate a year marked by notable achievements, collaborations, and a continuing commitment to excellence. Here are the top stories that shaped our journey over the past year.

Alum Sam Sasan Shoamanesh has been presented with the 2024 International Bar Association (IBA) Award for Outstanding Contribution by a Legal Practitioner to Human Rights for his extraordinary dedication to defending human rights and cultivating the international Rule of Law for over two decades, particularly during his work at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

In 2024, the University of Ottawa continued to make its mark as a leader in research and innovation. Through its investments, state-of-the-art infrastructure and strategic partnerships, the University worked to improve the well-being of local and global communities.

The Ontario government is pleased to announce the appointment of Justice Martel to the Ontario Court of Justice. Chief Justice Sharon Nicklas has assigned Justice Martel to Ottawa.

Professor Carl McMillan spent 30 years teaching at Carleton University, so it may surprise some that shortly before his passing in October, he chose to make a significant $1 million gift to the University of Ottawa.

The Common Law Section recently hosted the 17th annual Nelligan Law First-Year Moot Court Competition. The competition, which has been sponsored by Nelligan Law since 2007, is designed to immerse students in the fundamentals of advocacy and experiential legal practice, just 10 weeks after beginning law school.
