The purpose of the Hyperbaric Medicine Fellowship Program is to train anesthesiologists in hyperbaric medicine. To be eligible, it is required for the candidate to be able to work clinically as an anesthesiologist in Canada. This Fellowship Program involves a minimum of one year in duration, renewable up to a maximum of three-years.
The fellow will:
- Expand their existing base of knowledge in hyperbaric medicine, focusing on deep understanding of physiology and pathophysiology of approved and emerging indications of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
- Supervise the hyperbaric oxygen therapy session and ensure safety while adapting to unanticipated findings or changing clinical circumstances.
- Recognize when to perform a TCOM, become proficient at conducting this procedure and interpretating the results.
- Gain expertise in applying strategies to mitigate hyperbaric medicine complications for individual patients.
- Describe the physiology of mechanisms of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and understand how it leads to clinical effects.
- Be exposed to a broad variety of cases and special patient groups to gain proficiency in hyperbaric medicine.
- Be involved in research and scholarship, leading to publications.
- Be integrated into the activities of an academic Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.
Clinical and Academic Responsibilities
- The fellow in Hyperbaric Medicine will work clinically in anesthesiology and in hyperbaric medicine.
- To tailor fellow’s training to meet their future needs, including to prepare clinicians who wish to be future leaders in hyperbaric medicine.
Academic Supervision
This will be achieved through:
- Working with the Fellow to develop a research plan aligned with their professional goals in academic hyperbaric medicine.
- Providing training in research and/or scholarship through a combination of didactic training, research practice and intensive individual mentorship in research methods and dissemination, including publication and patient/public engagement.
Academic Responsibilities
The goals of the fellowship will be achieved via formal and informal teaching, as follows:
- Commitment to completion of at least one research/scholarly projects;
- Presentation of their project at the Department’s Annual Gary Johnson Research Day;
- Participation / attendance in Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine Rounds, Research in progress seminars and other activities.
Clinical Responsibilities
The Fellow will be expected to practice anesthesiology independently in all subspecialty areas.
Competencies upon Fellowship Completion
Upon completion of the Research Fellowship, the Fellow will be able to:
- Work clinically in hyperbaric medicine;
- Contribute and develop research in hyperbaric medicine.
Expectations during the Fellowship
The Fellow will be expected to achieve several deliverables within their Fellowship year. Progress will be assessed every 3 months in order to provide specific guidance and adjustment of the work, if necessary. The Fellow is expected to formulate and conduct at least one research/scholarly project.
