The University of Ottawa Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine offers a one or two year Fellowship in Simulation and Medical Education in partnership with the University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre (uOSSC) and the Department of Innovation in Medical Education (DIME).

Program Overview

The fellow will be actively involved and working towards two fellowships.  A simulation fellowship through the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine (DAPM), and a Department of Innovation in Medical Education (DIME) fellowship.

Academic responsibilities

The goals of the fellowship will be achieved via formal and informal teaching as described below:

For the DAPM Fellowship:

  • Active participation in the Departments residency simulation program
  • Commitment to complete a scholarly project (from research question to publication, including applying for research grants).
  • Presentation of research project at the Department’s annual research day
  • Participation / attendance in Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine Rounds / Journal Club
  • Participation in teaching programs for medical students / residents within the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine
  • Participation in assigned teaching programs for medical students / residents outside clinical departments as needed
  • Highly encouraged to enroll in Master of Education degree or PhD program

For the DIME fellowship:

  • Commitment to complete a scholarly project (from research question to publication, including applying for research grants).
  • Attendance at the DIME’s Health Education Scholars Program (HESP) and Foundational Elements of Applied Simulation Theory (FEAST) curriculum, as part of the DIME fellowship.
  • Participation / attendance in DIME / uOSSC Rounds

Clinical responsibilities

The Fellow will be based at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) at either the Civic campus (trauma, neuro, vascular) or General campus (thoracic, oncology); both campuses provide general surgery, ENT, urology, orthopedics, gynecology services. The fellow will be expected to practice independently in all subspecialty areas. There are no cardiac or pediatric cases at TOH.

The University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre (uOSSC)

We are fortunate to be operating out of the uOSSC, one of the largest  simulation centers in Canada, which provides unique educational opportunities to our Fellows. Our 20,000 ft facility offers four high-fidelity simulation rooms integrated with a procedural / surgical skills laboratory and conference facilities. We work in collaboration with the Departments of Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics / Gynecology, Surgery and Critical Care, all of whom have active simulation programs at the uOSSC.

Former Fellows graduating from our Fellowship program have established or joined Simulation Programs in Winnipeg, Edmonton, Kingston and the Canadian Armed Forces in Canada, and internationally, Saudi Arabia, Austria, the United Kingdom and China.

Our group is composed of 11 instructors with extensive experience in teaching and research in simulation / medical education.  All members of our team have fellowship training in simulation and/or further advanced medical education degrees (MEd).   Our team has recognized expertise in teaching using simulation and a strong track record in education research. We are actively involved in international academic collaboration and in presenting international simulation-based workshops.

  • To provide intensive research and instructor training in simulation / medical education
  • To provide training in curricula development, and mentorship in teaching, learning and research in health professions education.
  • To prepare Clinician Educators for a career in academic medicine.
