The University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine’s Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) program is scheduled to undergo its accreditation from April 15 to 18, 2018. The program’s last accreditation in 2010 yielded strong results, with compliance of 124 out of 131 standards. Over the intervening 7 years; compliance on all standards has been achieved.
This achievement was made possible thanks to the support of faculty, residents and students who helped prepare the student report, participated in self-study committees, and sat in on meetings with the survey team. For Accreditation 2018, the UGME program is once again calling on the same level of commitment and dedication to ensure its success.
Since the last accreditation in 2010, there have been substantial changes to the standards and elements and a requirement for greater detail and proof of compliance. This means that elements that were found to be compliant in 2010 may no longer meet current requirements. There are also several new elements/standards for which we will be assessed for the first time.
A mock review is scheduled for Monday, November 13 to Wednesday, November 15, 2017. It is an important opportunity to ensure all participants are prepared for the full visit next spring. Those selected to participate in the review from the student and faculty groups will receive direct invitations from the UGME accreditation team. Additionally, external reviewers from the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) will be invited to assess the UGME program’s compliance with the accreditation process in order to identify potential areas of concern in advance of the formal visit.
Undergraduate medical programs in Canada leading to the MD degree are accredited through a partnership between the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) and the U.S.-based Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
Every eight years, programs must conduct a full survey of resources, learning environment, curriculum, faculty, and student services. This medical school self-study includes an independently conducted student analysis and a site visit by a team of external reviewers.
