Those interested in pursing Critical Care as a subspecialty must first complete the 3-year Core Internal Medicine Postgraduate Specialty Program.

The Adult Critical Care Training Program at the University of Ottawa is a 2-year program and is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Due to its multidisciplinary approach to critically ill patients, candidates from emergency medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, or anesthesia base specialty programs are eligible to apply. Candidates must have completed training in their base program on entry to the Adult Critical Care Medicine program. The number of residents accepted to the program varies annually.

The University of Ottawa offers a comprehensive Residency program in Adult Critical Care Medicine. It has received full accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), with strengths in clinical training and excellence in medical education and research.

Fellowship Hôpital Académique Montfort Ottawa

General

L’ Hôpital Montfort is the only francophone tertiary hospital attached to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa. Montfort includes a medical-surgical intensive care unit with 13 intensive care beds and 5 intermediate care beds. The unit offers a motivational learning environment.

Objectives

You will divide your time between clinical practice in the intensive care unit and a microprogram in health sciences education within the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa. You will also be responsible for completing a research project in education, leading to a publication or presentation at a national conference (project topic to be discussed during the selection procedure).

Admission criteria

You must:

• Be a senior resident enrolled in a Critical Care residency program or a licensed critical care physician wishing to further improve their skills health sciences education
• Be bilingual (French and English)
• Be able to collaborate within an interprofessional and multidisciplinary team
• Present a fair, ethical, and professional identity throughout the fellowship
• Be autonomous in routine intensive care procedures and, with indirect supervision, manage patients admitted to the unit

Admission condition

You must:

• Submit a cover letter, a letter of support from your institution and program, and 2 letters of recommendation
• Be present for a virtual interview
• Meet the administrative formalities of the Faculty of Medicine of Ottawa (up-to-date vaccinations, passport and student visa, etc.)
