What we offer you
Trainees have the option between a 1-year clinical fellowship to consolidate their expertise in bariatric medicine or a 2-3 year clinical investigator fellowship in bariatric medicine. Clinical investigator fellows enroll in a Master’s Program in the Department of Epidemiology or a basic science department at the University of Ottawa.
Trainees will spend time at two locations: 1. The Ottawa Hospital Weight Management Clinic, a tertiary care site that is a Bariatric Centre of Excellence and 2. LEAF Weight Management Clinic, a community-based academic site. Trainees will learn about the medical and surgical management of obesity and work closely with allied health. In addition, rotations with the pediatric bariatric program, eating disorder clinic, sleep disorder clinic, and preoperative care clinic will be arranged.
All trainees are encouraged to pursue a research topic in bariatrics. Research interests include database development, program development, cohort studies, genotype-phenotype associations, genomics and physiology of weight loss resistance, pulmonary function, adipose tissue cellular remodelling, psychotropic agents, smoking, health care utilization.
The fellowships are structured such that in addition to clinical practice, trainees will prepare and pursue other learning opportunities (self-directed learning, monthly journal club and research training such as Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) research education workshops). All North American trainees will write the American Board of Obesity Medicine exams that are held in December. Regular teaching sessions will be held in preparation for the exam.
