The Division of Nephrology at the Ottawa Department of Medicine strives to provide world class clinical care to residents of Ottawa & Eastern Ontario who suffer from kidney diseases. Our division offers a full complement of specialty ambulatory clinics at the Jindal Kidney Care Centre: General Nephrology Hypertension, Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease, and Progressive Renal Insufficiency. These clinics are led by physicians with world class expertise. Inpatients are admitted to the clinical teaching unit, where a strong multidisciplinary care plan has been developed. The Division of Nephrology also maintains its independent expertise in critical care nephrology and, in close collaboration with the Intensivists, is solely responsible for providing renal replacement services, including SLED and CRRT, to all intensive care areas at The Ottawa Hospital and The University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

The purpose of an observership is to gain knowledge and expertise concerning health care and services, such as patient care procedures, within a hospital or healthcare organization.
Observerships may be arranged with the individual programs in the Ottawa regional hospitals by contacting the Program Director in the hospital in which you wish to have observer status.
Resident Observerships are not available in the Core Internal Medicine Specialty.
Arrangements are not provided by the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) office of the University of Ottawa and observers do not register with the PGME Office.

Our program operates out of The Ottawa Hospital and serves a large catchment area that will provide you with a rich and diverse experience in clinical nephrology.
The Nephrology Training Program offered through the University of Ottawa and the Department of Medicine has been in existence since 1986 and is fully approved by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Since the inception of the program, all trainees have been successful in obtaining their certificate of special competence.
Royal College Fellows and Clinical Nephrology fellows train together in our program, which allows for a diverse and supportive learning environment. We currently have 10 trainees at various stages of expertise.
The Nephrology Division in the Department of Medicine consists of 20 individuals located at three sites, serving a base population of approximately one million. The Civic site has an active consult service, as well as an 18-station hemodialysis unit. The General site is the location for our nephrology CTU, as well as a 32-station hemodialysis unit. The Riverside site is home to the Home Dialysis Unit (including home hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis), another 30-station hemodialysis unit and all the ambulatory clinic activity (general Nephrology, pre-dialysis and transplant). We care for about 700 hemodialysis and 140 peritoneal dialysis patients in the region. The renal transplant service cares for over 700 patients and performs about seventy new transplants per year.
Our 2-year program consists of a structured clinical first year and a flexible second elective year to allow trainees to pursue areas of individual interest. Rotations are located at all three sites of the Ottawa Hospital. The first-year rotations consist of in-patients/consultation, hemodialysis, home dialysis, transplantation and ambulatory clinics. Each trainee has a personal longitudinal ambulatory care clinic that is held one afternoon a week (Tuesday).
The second year of training can be entirely geared to fulfill the needs related to your eventual career path. In addition to further study of the major areas of nephrology, there is an opportunity for you to spend time in pediatric nephrology, pathology and community nephrology. Alternatively, you may choose to spend time doing research. Our program has a strong basic science research program through the newly built University of Ottawa Kidney Research Centre, and a strong clinical research component with several of our nephrologists trained as epidemiologists.
We have a well-established fellows’ curriculum in a weekly noon-hour-rounds taught by members of our Division. In addition, there are weekly nephrology grand rounds, clinical case discussions, biopsy rounds, evidence-based nephrology and journal clubs.
The Division also offers a 12-month fellowship in kidney transplantation; the program is accredited with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as an Area of Focused Competence (AFC) Diploma in Solid Organ Transplantation. This fellowship is geared to those individuals who have completed Nephrology training but would like to extend and expand their expertise in kidney transplantation. The training program includes a minimum of 6 months of core clinical experience in the inpatient and outpatient setting as well as two months of laboratory transplantation in tissue typing and pathology. Four months are set aside for possible elective experiences depending on the fellow’s research and/or clinical interests. The fellowship accepts 1-2 trainees per year. Applications are due by October 16thof each calendar year with decisions made by mid-November.

The University of Ottawa advanced chronic kidney disease Fellowship is a one-year program designed to provide advanced training in the medical management of patients with severe chronic kidney disease, as well as the managerial skills required to head a multidisciplinary clinic.
You will gain experience in a large and diverse program working with faculty with expertise in medical education, clinical research, vascular access, home dialysis, in-center hemodialysis and kidney transplantation. You will be expected to participate in scholarly activity in the form of research or quality improvement projects while developing clinical expertise in the care and management of these patients.
Training will take place within the Division of Nephrology at the Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa. The Division provides multidisciplinary clinical care to severe kidney disease patients in a tertiary care hospital that serves a population of approximately 1 million. The multidisciplinary severe chronic kidney disease program delivers outpatient care to approximately 700 patients in the Multi-Care Kidney (MCK) clinic.
The program will foster clinical knowledge and research in the field of severe kidney disease, introduce the important concept of quality assurance and teach the roles and obligations of a medical director of a multidisciplinary clinic.

The program is expected to raise the level of knowledge in the management of patients with severe CKD and increase awareness of concepts related to the care of these patients. Upon graduation, the fellow will be a clinical expert in clinical management of patients with severe kidney disease as well as in the administrative responsibilities of a multidisciplinary clinic.
The University of Ottawa Hemodialysis Fellowship is a one-year program designed to give you advanced training in the medical management of hemodialysis patients, strong and practical technical knowledge of hemodialysis and water treatment equipment as well as the managerial skills required to head a hemodialysis program.
You will gain experience in a large and diverse program working with faculty with expertise in medical education, clinical research, vascular access and technical support of hemodialysis and water treatment and administration of health care. You will be expected to participate in scholarly activity including a quality assurance or improvement project while developing clinical expertise in the care and management of patients.
The University of Ottawa Nephrology training program offers an adult nephrology education program, affiliated with the University of Ottawa and accredited by the Royal College. In addition, we also have an AST-approved Transplantation fellowship, an ASH-approved Hypertension fellowship and a Home Dialysis fellowship.
Training will take place within the Division of Nephrology at the Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa. The Division provides hemodialysis care in a tertiary care hospital that serves a population of approximately ~ 1 million. The hemodialysis program is one of the largest in Canada and delivers care to approximately 750 hemodialysis patients in 2 large in-centre hemodialysis units as well as in 6 satellite hemodialysis units of various sizes spread within 120km of the tertiary care centre.
The program will foster interest in clinical knowledge and research in the dialysis field, introduce the important concepts of quality assurance and improvement and introduce the roles and obligations of a medical director of a dialysis unit.

Upon graduation, the fellow will be a clinical expert in the clinical management of hemodialysis patients as well as in the technical and administrative responsibilities of a hemodialysis physician. By improving the knowledge about the running of the dialysis unit the overall standard of care would improve further.
The University of Ottawa Clinical Fellowship in Critical Care Nephrology is a one-year program designed to provide advanced training in the medical management of patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) and other aspects of critical care nephrology. This includes a focus on developing clinical and technical expertise related to the various renal replacement therapy (RRT) modalities used in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting (including intermittent hemodialysis (IHD), slow low-efficiency dialysis (SLED) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Fellows will gain experience in a large and diverse program working with faculty who have expertise in medical education, clinical research, vascular access and technical support of IHD, SLED and CRRT. In addition to clinical training, Critical Care Nephrology fellows will be expected to participate in scholarly activities, including a research project (which may involve clinical or basic science research or quality assurance/improvement), related to critical care nephrology.
The University of Ottawa Nephrology training program offers an adult nephrology education program, affiliated with the University of Ottawa and accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. In addition, it offers an American Society of Transplantation (AST) approved Transplantation fellowship, American Society of Hypertension (ASH) approved Hypertension fellowship, Home Dialysis fellowship and Hemodialysis fellowship.
Training will take place within the Division of Nephrology at the Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa. Ample exposure to AKI cases and other critical care nephrology issues is ensured as the Division provides critical care nephrology expertise and manages acute RRT (including IHD, SLED and CRRT) for a tertiary care hospital serving a population of over 1.4 million. The Ottawa Hospital includes a 20-bed inpatient nephrology ward, 32 bed mixed medical-surgical ICU and 10 bed CCU at the Ottawa General Hospital (OGH) campus; an additional 28 bed mixed medical-surgical ICU and 12-bed Neurological ICU (NICU) at the Ottawa Civic Hospital (OCH) campus (the regional trauma centre for Eastern Ontario); the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI), a quaternary referral centre with a 20 bed CCU and 20-bed cardiac surgery ICU (CSICU). IHD is provided in all critical care areas. SLED is provided in both ICUs with CRRT provided at the UOHI in CCU, CSICU and occasionally intra-operatively.
The program will foster advanced clinical knowledge and scholarship in the field of critical care nephrology.

The program is expected to raise the level of clinical knowledge in the field of AKI and critical care nephrology. Upon graduation, the fellow will be a clinical expert in the medical management of patients with AKI and other aspects of critical care nephrology. In addition, the fellow will have established the necessary knowledge and skills for conducting ongoing research relevant to the field of critical care nephrology.
This fellowship position gives opportunities to gain expertise in different aspects of nephrology including Home Dialysis Therapies, Renal Transplantation, Intensive Care Nephrology, Fluid-electrolyte issues and Acute and Chronic Renal Replacement Therapies.
The fellows are expected to rotate through different areas of nephrology throughout their fellowship training to enrich their knowledge and advance their clinical skills.
Clinical fellows are expected to participate in a research project or develop an educational project under the guidance of one or more staff members.
The Division of Nephrology at the University of Ottawa in one of the biggest programs in the province. We are one of the largest Home Dialysis and Renal Transplant programs in the country.
This Fellowship is designed to provide advanced training in the medical management of patients with glomerulonephritis and kidney diseases requiring immunosuppression and multidisciplinary management. In this one-year program, Fellows will gain experience in a large and diverse program, working with faculty with expertise in glomerulonephritis, rheumatology, renal pathology, medical education, and clinical research. They will also be involved in scholarly activities with a mandatory research or quality improvement project, regular critical appraisal, while developing clinical expertise in the care of management of these patients. This Fellowship will provide locally trained experts in glomerulonephritis that will be integral to expanding and improving GN care in Ontario.
The Ottawa Hospital Glomerulonephritis Clinic is one of 6 academic Centres of Excellence recognized by the Province. The University of Ottawa Division Of Nephrology has a large and diverse faculty with expertise in clinical care and research including clinical epidemiology and basic science.
Candidates should be fluent in English, (Fluency in French is an asset) and will have completed clinical training in nephrology. The applicant must have passed or be eligible for independent licensure in Ontario, or must be eligible for an educational license (minimum of 4 years of residency training following medical school). Outstanding applicants with equivalent training in other medical systems are also encouraged to apply.

The Home Dialysis program at The Ottawa Hospital is one of largest in the country and is comprised of patients on both home peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis. The Ottawa Hospital is one of the few centres in the world with an embedded PD catheter program.
You will also have the opportunity to participate in one of our home dialysis research projects and present this at an international meeting.
At the end of your fellowship, you should be competent to lead a home dialysis program and receive a Fellowship completion certification from the University of Ottawa.
