• Clerkship electives are available to all fourth-year medical students throughout Canada and Internationally.  At uOttawa, students can choose between a two-week elective in the Clinical Teaching Units (CTUs) or in the Consult/Triage (C/T).  Applications are accepted via the AFMC portal.

Electives for uOttawa residents

Internal resident interested in doing an elective, should contact their Program Administrator, who will then help them find inquire whether the hospital they want to rotate through has a spot available.

Electives for non-uOttawa residents

Interested residents should apply a minimum of 60 days in advance via the electives portal. More information can be found on the Electives page.

The purpose of an observership is to gain knowledge and expertise concerning health care and services, such as patient care procedures, within a hospital or healthcare organization.

Observerships may be arranged with the individual programs in the Ottawa regional hospitals by contacting the Program Director in the hospital in which you wish to have observer status.
 
Resident Observerships are not available in the Core Internal Medicine Specialty.

Arrangements are not provided by the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) office of the University of Ottawa and observers do not register with the PGME Office.

What we offer you

The qualified Neuro-Respiratory Fellow will be a highly motivated learner and clinician. The fellowship will be undertaken at the Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre and the Ottawa Hospital, under the direct guidance and supervision of Dr. Douglas McKim, Medical Director (co-chair of the first Canadian Guidelines on Home Mechanical Ventilation).

Fellows are involved in the assessment and care of patients enrolled in the Respiratory Rehabilitation Program as well as patients with neuromuscular diseases (NMD), both in the outpatient clinics and within the hospital.

With one-on-one supervision, fellows will learn to investigate and recognize signs of inadequate cough capacity, aspiration risk, and ventilatory insufficiency.

Background

The University of Ottawa obstructive lung disease and pulmonary rehabilitation Fellowship is a one-year program designed to provide advanced training in the medical management of patients with severe obstructive lung disease, as well as the managerial skills required to head a pulmonary rehabilitation program.

You will gain experience in a large and diverse program working with faculty with expertise in medical education, clinical research, palliative respiratory care, and multidisciplinary respiratory community outreach. You will be expected to participate in scholarly activity in the form of research or quality improvement projects, while developing clinical expertise in the care and management of these patients.

Training will take place within the Division of Respirology at the Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa in a tertiary care hospital that serves a population of approximately 1 million.

Aim of the program

The program will foster clinical knowledge and research in the field of OLD, introduce the important concept of quality assurance and teach the roles and obligations of a medical director of a pulmonary rehabilitation program.

Benefits

The program is expected to raise the level of knowledge in the management of patients with severe OLD and increase awareness of concepts related to the care of these patients as well as in the medical responsibilities of a pulmonary rehabilitation program.

Specific activities

The fellow will spend 6 months working with Dr. Sandoz at The TOH Rehabilitation Centre to master the medical responsibilities necessary to run a pulmonary rehabilitation program- this will involve supervision of inpatients and outpatients who are being referred to and enrolled in the pulmonary rehabilitation program. The fellow will also interpret cardio-pulmonary exercise tests at the rehab centre and will attend outpatient clinics in pulmonary rehabilitation. The fellow will attend 1-2 weekly outpatient obstructive lung disease clinic sessions with Dr. Aaron, and the fellow will complete a two-month (or longer if desired) research elective with Dr. Aaron.

What we offer you

Our program offers multidisciplinary exposure to all of the aspects of sleep medicine and Circadian rhythm disorders with special focus on laboratory aspects. All fellows attend general sleep clinics, as well as clinics in psychiatry, neurology and pediatric sleep medicine. Fellows attend general sleep clinics at the university hospital as well as independent health facilities in urban and rural settings.

In the laboratory, fellows will learn the technical aspects of data acquisition, data scoring, and study interpretation for nocturnal baseline and therapeutic polysomnograms as well as MSLT/MWT testing, portable monitoring and actigraphy. Teaching is based on AASM criteria as well as CPSO Ontario standards.

Candidates are examined internally during and at the end of the program and are encouraged to write the European Sleep medicine examinations. Many of our fellows focus on clinical training. However, if the candidate wishes to pursue a research pathway, there are opportunities for collaboration with the Centre for Practice-Changing Research.
