Biography

Dr. Sylvie Aucoin completed her anesthesiology training at Dalhousie University in 2010. She practiced as an anesthesiologist and critical care physician at The Moncton Hospital in Moncton, New Brunswick from 2011-2017, and she served as the Chief of Anesthesiology from 2015-2017. She completed a Clinical Fellowship in Perioperative Medicine at University College London Hospital (UCLH) in 2018, as well as the accompanying MSc Perioperative Medicine at University College London (UCL) in 2019. She joined The Ottawa Hospital Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine in 2018. 

She held the position of Site Chief, Civic Campus of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine from 2019-2023. She has also previously held other leadership positions in the Perioperative Service Line, including Medical Lead for Surgical Triage in the Covid Context and Perioperative Efficiency Clinical Lead. She is currently a Co-Lead of the TOH Virtual Recovery After Surgery (VRAS), a program she helped found in 2021 as part of the Covid recovery efforts. She is currently the Chair of the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society Hospital Chiefs of Anesthesia Section. 

Her research interests are perioperative frailty, virtual post-surgical care, and perioperative care pathways. She receives research funding awards from Accelerated Clinical Trials (ACT) Canada, Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR), The University of Ottawa Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine Research Award and The Ottawa Hospital Anesthesia Alternate Funds Association.
